NEVER give an infant or anyone, something that was prescribed for someone else. You don't know if they are allergic, or could have a bad interaction with someone else.
Take her to the Dr. tomorrow.

my son was doing this a few months ago, he is nearly 20 months now so it is a little different than your situation. It had been going on for 2 weeks and nothing was working he was barely eating and started turning down his regular bottle of milk with his meals. We took him to a walk-in clinic because the family dr's office was closed for Easter weekend. We were told there that it was just a cold that was going around right then and they gave us cough syrup to give him. We started him on the dimetapp they gave us and by tuesday it was still not helping him one bit so I got him in to see the fam doc on wednesday morning and after checking him over found out he didn't have a cold he has asthma.
I would strongly advise you to either call a health line if there is one in your area, or get her in to see the dr as soon as possible. Something is not right and I personally would rather find out from the dr that it is just a cold and be safe than wait or try something without checking and possibly be sorry. Beisdes most medicines are made for babies minimum 6 months unless you get other instruction from your doctor. They really can't tollerate as much as some people think at that young age. I had a heck of a time finding something for my son's first cold because he was maybe 2 or 3 months old and everything I found was 6 months +. I wound up bathing him daily in baby bath stuff for cold relief because he was too young for everything else.

NO! Please don't give the baby anything, especially narcotics such as codeine, until you talk to your pediatrician or another qualified health care practitioner. You could seriously harm your baby, and I'm sure you don't want that.
If you don't have a pediatrician, check your local health department. Or, if that isn't an option, you can try calling the local Emergency Department for guidance (though often they aren't allowed to give advice over the phone, without seeing the patient).
If she's really sick (coughing, fever, throwing up, sleepy all the time or isn't interested in her surroundings), you should have her seen by a health care practitioner (MD or nurse practitioner) without delay. She's too young to let this go for very long. Good luck!

there's not much you can do for a 5 month old with a virus assuming that's what it is. you can put baby Vick's on there chest and use a vaporizer. give your baby pedia-lite.and CALL THE DR.

I kinda had the same problem with my daughter , I asked the doctor about Liquid Codeine but he said that they do not give that to children under the age of a year old . So maybe you should go to your doctor and see what they say . Push comes to shove there is over the counter drugs for infants , Tylenol Cold and Cough FOR INFANTS is what I used for my little one it worked well . It has a suppressant in it to help relive and break up congestion .

NO, NO, NO!!!!!! Try sitting in the bathroom with the hot shower running for steam, and perhaps some Vicks BabyRub. Giving your baby even a little bit of codeine could quite easily poison her, and you'd never forgive yourself. Try smaller meals given more frequently to get more into her and less thrown up, but NO DRUGS!!!!!!!

Sounds like she has allergies. This happened to my son too, he would cough until he threw up, and it doesn't get better. Try environmental changes first.
Take down the curtains in her room (these collect dust which irritate her allergies)
wash bedding once a week
don't smoke around her, if you smoke, try quitting
vacume her carpet with a really good vacume cleaner daily
take away all stuffed animals, bag them tightly in a trash sack, and take them out of her room
Try these, and see if this works first, otherwise she will probably need an allergy medication to take daily.
We had to do all these things since he was 2, and he has been on medication since. Good luck!

no meds until you speak with your doctor. After six children it would give the baby some water to loosen her chest. maybe some ginger tea very, very weak it seems to calm the throat. If this is happening on a regular basis you need to contact the baby's doctor. You may want to try a humidifier when the baby sleeps, The baby could have croup.

Rather than asking people on Yahoo answers, since the majority of us are not medical professions, you should consider contacting your doctor.
Most doctor's do have emergency answering services that page them, it would be good to call it, let them know what is going on, the doctor will gladly call you back and give you instructions.

don't ever give your child any med that is not prescribed for her!!! if you are concerned about her coughing then call her primary care provider or take her to the ER. In a baby that small you don't know what effect the medication may have on her or what dose to give her so please don't self medicate her until you speak to someone who can tell you how much and what to give her.
