I'm planning to Thru Hike in 2007 and I've been a section hiker for many years.

- Buy and Watch Lynne Whelden's CD/Video _Lightweight_Backpacking_Secrets_Revealed_. Watch it once a day for a week. You'll learn something new every time.

- Read JR Tate (Model T)'s book "Walking on the Happy Side of Misery" and Ed Garvey's book "The New Appalachian Trail."

- Read online journals found at http://www.fred.net/kathy/at.html and at http://www.trailjournals.com

- Attend Trail Days (weekend after Mother's Day every year) in Damascus, VA (http://www.traildays.info) and The Gathering (in October) http://www.aldha.org

- Join the Appalachian Trail Concervancy http://www.appalachiantrail.org

- Join an online email group such as the AT-List at http://www.backcountry.net

- Don't buy gear until you've investigated your choices at http://www.backpackgeartest.org

- All of the above will suggest other ways to prepare for the AT.

- Walk every day, rain or shine. Eat healthy. Thru Hiking the Appalachian Trail is 10% Physical and 90% Mental.

I live near one end of the trail. To prepare all you really need is a bit of common survival knowledge (for emergencies) and common sense, prepare that way.. Oh yeah, watch out for the snakes.
