Thousands of years ago, a couple took something that did not belong to them. They stole it. Theft is not measured by the value of the item taken. Theft is theft. Moreover, the item stolen symbolized something significantly profound. Pointedly, the fruit symbolized the right to determine what is good and what is bad, what is acceptable and what is not. This right belongs solely to the creator. When they took the fruit, they said, in essence: "Well, I think I should determine for myself what I can and cannot do. I have enough sense to know what's good and what's bad. I am grown after all. Just because you created me doesn’t mean you can tell me what to do. You’re not the boss of me!” Now that’s pretty much the attitude they had.

Since they had children after their disobedience, they could now only pass on to their offspring what they themselves were – imperfect sinners. To sin means to miss the mark of perfection. The mark is, say 6 feet high. Whether I miss it by 4 feet or whether I miss it by 4 inches – I miss the mark of perfection - a miss is a miss. There was no real pressure on the couple to be obedient. They weren’t starving, they weren’t under peer pressure. The whole thing in a nutshell was they deliberately disobeyed for reasons of selfishness and greed. And they cared not a whit how it would affect their offspring – that means you, and me. And if we don't believe how serious selfishness and greed can be - take a look at the world: virtually every single problem, woe and difficulty can be traced to somebody's selfishness and greed: somebody's attitude of "it's all about me."

So you’re not guilty of eating the fruit. But imperfection is genetic. And we all have our original parents’ genes.

So, what kinda fish you going for?

Whether or not you want to accept that is immaterial really. God doesn't need to look all the way back to Adam to find you guilty of sin.

Consider this analogy. Say you are a fine upstanding member of the community who gives to charity and does volunteer work and helps little old ladies cross the street and you always obey the law. But one day you are driving your car and not paying attention and you run a red light.

You come before the judge and tell him all about how good you are and how you just made a mistake. The judge can't declare you "not guilty" because he is sworn to uphold the law. In the same way God cannot declare a person "not guilty" if they break one of his laws because that would make Him a liar when He gave us the laws.

Now, have you ever stolen something even if it was something small like a pen from work?

That would make you guilty of being a theif.

Have you ever told a lie?

That would violate God's law against bearing false witness.

Have you ever used the name of God or Jesus like a curse word?

That would be the sin of blasphemy.

Have you ever looked at a woman with lust in your heart?

Jesus said that anyone who looks at a woman other than their wife with lust has already committed the sin of adultery in their heart.

God says that anyone who breaks even one of his laws has to pay with their life. It may sound harsh, but God doesn't need anyone's money or for them to do anything for Him to make up for their crime. He is in charge and He says that the penalty for sin is death.

So if you were to come before Him and be judged according to his laws what do you think He would be compelled by his perfect nature to give as a verdict in your case?

God has already paid your sin debt by sending Jesus to die in your place. All you have to do is accept this gift by faith.

I pray that you will find a good local church, show up and listen to the gospel message, and let the Holy Spirit draw you to new and eternal life in Christ in whose name I pray, Amen!

You are not guilty of eating said fruit. But you are a sinner as a result. Go fishing already.

you're doomed. & FYI the fruit was a fig. why would anyone get that upset over a fig?

i'd say your only salvation would be to find you some holy water and throw in your line. Remember Jesus loves fishermen, first couple of guys in his crew were fishin when he found them.
