Eat when you are hungry. Yes, it may slow your metabolism if you don't eat often enough, but in my experience (as a weightloss counselor) "enough" is different for everybody. If you aren't going to snack, I would suggest you be religious about eating all three meals and getting all the nutrition you can out of them.

Ok to snack. As long as it is healthy - like fruits, veggies. In my culture typically eating 5 smaller, healthier meals is better than gorging at mealtime and late night snacks.

I have travelled to many parts of the world, and lived with locals. I noticed that "snack food" is not consumed in foreign countries. My cousins in China ate 3 full meals--bowl of rice with meat (chicken, duck, fish, pork or beef)--daily. They rarely washed it down with sugary drinks. It was soup or water. My cousins are fit and healthy unlike their chubbier American cousins who definitely snack on chips and cookies with soda, before dinner.

In Asia and in Europe, people might have fruit as an occasional snack. European and Asian tourists are usually "shocked" by the size of Americans. I believe that we are the fattest people on earth because of our CONSTANT snacking. Our snacks are all manufactured ingredients!!
