I live here, and I think September is the best month in DC, for visitors and for residents. July and August are simply oppressive with heat and humidity. Winter vacations should be to warm places (the islands!!!) and spring in DC with the Cherry Blossom Festival is pretty but entirely overcrowded. September brings wonderful weather, lower prices for hotels, less congestion, and there's plenty of street festivals and other events on the weekends.
PS don't let people who say DC is full of crime scare you away. It's like any other city--- there are some good neighborhoods (most of the city) and some bad neighborhoods, but if you use some common sense as you move through the city, you will have a nice time and not get mugged or murdered, as some imply. Even after dark!

I think during Spring in April when the Cherry Blossoms are out... its very pretty! Although it is pretty chilly. Also May is nice because its not too hot but not too cold. Don't go in the Summer because schools are out. Go before the DC area schools get out or you'll have a fun vacation waiting in lines!

ive been to dc multiple times and i think the two best times are:
1. around christmas because you get to see the white house decorated on the inside. its really pretty and the gingerbread house is amazing.
2. in the spring around april or so because you get to see the beautiful cherry blossoms. ive never personaly seen them but ive seen them in pictures and on the news.

Only during the daylight. To much crime, in the city. Park somnewhere, like your hotel, and take a taxi, heavy traffic during the day. Don't go out at night

the northwest part of dc is safe even at night. actually travelling during the day is bad on the weekdays. traffic is horrendous during the day, i wouldn't recommend it.
