About 8 months before, start shopping. I think you should also already have a good feel for the general theme of your wedding (e.g. formal, semi-formal or casual chic, not as in 'beach' or 'asian') and that the dress should fit into the formality of your event. Decide on the style that best flatters you, then "shop" that style in magazines, online and in stores when you can (most bridal shops don't let you do much when you walk in because you have to have an appointment). After this, decide what you want to spend on the gown, then buy it. The time line is something like this:

As you can imagine, it can take a while to get a bridal gown picked out, fitted, and altered, so right after you get engaged, you should make a timeline. It takes 8 to 12 weeks from the time you are fitted until you will receive your dress. Then you have to tack on a couple of weeks for alterations. Finally, the delivery of the gown from the manufacturer can be a problem. If the gown is in stock, delivery is almost immediate; if the gown is being customized - and most dresses are - delivery can take up to four months. So being the nervous nellies that we are, we suggest that you choose your gown at least six months before the big day.

The minimum is 6 months before the wedding because it takes a while to make a wedding gown and then you have to figure in time for alterations. This is especially the case if it has a lot of intricate beadwork to be done. Most bridal salons recommend 6-9 months so that you have a safety net. If you are having someone make it (ie. a custom clothing designer) it might be less but check with that person on what they are comfortable with.

Start scouting now, just to get an idea of what style you like. If you fall in love with one get it. Otherwise, wait till about 6 months before the wedding. At this time you will have a better feel of what the wedding will be like and you can find a dress that complements it. At this point you should have also narrowed down your likes and dislikes which will make dress shopping eaiser and more fun :).

Congrats!

Well...first you are 19 if I'm correct so why not extend the engagement an extra year or more until you are done with college? Planning a wedding and going to school and working equals MASSIVE STRESS lol. You are still young enough and to be honest you do have plenty of time. The fact that you are going to college seems to me that you are a smart lady who wants to further her knowledge and also with college education comes more job availabilities that are higher paying. (besides college is awesome! It's an experience not to be missed out) Which brings me to my 2nd question, do you really want to not work after getting married? Especially if you are going to school. I think if you did you would have said that "YOU" wanted to quit and not that Sam says so cuz it's your job. Even if you said "WE decided that I would not work after marriage" that would at least sound like it was partly your decision. These are things that need to be ironed out before the wedding of course. You should never live your life in regret if it's something that you have the ability to change. Answering your question, the only way to make more money is to change jobs or sell stuff you have. Also, cutting down on costs such as number of guests or getting married in the winter or on off days such as sunday or friday night. Tap into your friends for their talent, do they know how to make invitations etc. For 15k you should be able to have a great wedding, you have to learn what it is that you really need and what are the things that you want. Good luck!

i am also getting married next august, the 11th to be exact. I havent even started looking for a dress yet. I think I am going to start looking soon though because i want to be sure to leave enough time for alterations or if I can't find my perfect dress I can still have time to keep looking. I suggest the same for you. Good luck! :)

As soon as you see a sale (January is usually good for sales), and not sooner than 9 or any later than 4 months before hand. You may change sizes (especially with all the stress) remember. That all goes out the window if you find the perfect dress at a second hand shop - then just buy it an get it tailored.

In my expierence, I bought my dress 8 months before the wedding. Bad idea because I was constantlly looking at wedding stuff so I eventually found a dress I loved way more than the first one. Luckily Davids bridal let me exchange it. So don't start too early

I bought mine about 10 months in advance. I found the perfect one & I knew that was it when I laid eyes on it. When you find the perfect one you'll know! Plus, I had gotten such a good deal on it that I couldn't pass it up. I got my gown half price with a free tiara! So just whenever you think you've found the "one", go ahead. Weddings take lots of time to plan...at least you'll have that out of the way. I'm sure everything will work out lovely!!
Good luck!!

im getting married in 2 weeks july 8th. I bought my dress 3 weeks ago. Very hard to find anything nice. I really lucked out. You need to look at least 5 months in advance. It usually takes 3 months for them to get the dress in...in your size that is. then you want to leave a lil lag in case you need alterations.
