I think there's a difference in French and English- there's an area close to where I live that's pronounced differently than what I believe the French pronounciation is. Anyone know for sure, and not just a calculated guess?

the area I mentioned gets pronounced Ri-vere-a and I thought it was just because when we (south Africans) name a place after an existing one, we seem to manage to mess the name up- but in The Ring, at the beginning where Amber's character asks where her friend heard about the tape she says "someone from Riviera told me"and she pronounced it Rivere-a - which is why I wondered.

Myself, I'd always heard it, and grown up with the pronunciation like "Riv-ee-era" with the I being a short sound.

Not sure about the difference in pronunciations, but that's not to say that perhaps there aren't...I mean, look at Arkansas. Everyone in Kansas says Ar-kan-saw, while seemingly the rest of the nation says it Ar-Kansas...

I looked it up on the on-line version of Merriam Webster dictionary. They actually have a link that you can click to hear an audio clip of the word being pronounced correctly.

The temptation is strong to pronounce it, "Riv-ee-era," but I believe the proper way is, "Riv-yer-ah."
