Definitely get at least a 1/2 to 1 inch thick cushion pad to provide comfort and avoid slippage. Also -- if you have sky lights in the room you are placing the rug...you can get a UV filter that lets the sun in and keeps UV rays out that bleach the carpet. I learned this the hard way...I have an expensive carpet/sky lights...that faded part of my rug! Good luck

Use a good rug pad that is the appropriate size. Also, if the floor is in a room that gets a lot of direct sunlight, you could have fading around the perimeter of the rug that will be apparent when you take the rug out.

You can purchase a non slip foam at Walmart, it isn't real thick but it will protect the hard wood floor and you can trim it to size, I have one in our dinette area under our area rug. Look in the throw rug section of Walmart, and I'm sure that Lowes, Home Depot and Menards carry them, they work great.

Umm none? An area rug will help protect the hard wood.

The other answers are good but do not use an abrasive backed rug like regular carpet, it will scratch the floor like it did on my ceramic tile. It needs to be soft or rubber backed at least.

Make sure it doesn't slide around when you walk across it or you have a safety hazard.

Must have anti-slip mat to prevent falls.
DIY stores have them.
