If you are going to apply for SSI and or SSD (Social Security Disability) you should make an appointment to go to your local SSA office (social security administration). You can make an appointment by calling 1-800-772-1213. You should go on line to fill out the on line disability report ( http://www.ssa.gov ), which will save you a lot of time at your appointment IF you fill out the report completely. If you want to apply for BOTH SSI and SSD, you should let them know that when you set up your appointment, because they are two different programs and need two different applications. They will use the same medical information for both applications, but they each have their own set of questions they have to ask.

To be eligible for SSI you have to be found disabled and have limited income and resources. To be eligible for SSD you have to be found disabled and be ensured, meaning you have to have enough work credits on your record.

Being approved for SSI and or SSD the first time you apply is pretty rare, but it does depend on what type of disability you have. If you do get denied, you should appeal it instead of reapplying. While you are waiting for your SSI and or SSD to go though, you should apply for welfare as it can take several years to resolve your SSI/SSD applications. I say resolve, because I don't want to say that you will be approved after that time. It may still be found that you are not disabled. It could take you several years to be approved, or several years to find out that you will be denied.

Good luck.
