I haven't been to the dentist for 10 years. Now my teeth are really bad and I'm scared the dentist will give me a big lecture and shout at me for not going sooner.

I've got huge cavities in 3 of my teeth which hurt a lot now, and I've got smaller cavities in several other teeth as well.

Will the dentist give me into trouble if I go now? I always used to get lectures from my dentist in the past if I had cavities about how I wasn't taking care of my teeth. I dread to think wat they'll say about the state of my teeth now :o(

Hey hun, I was in a similar position to you, hadn't seen a dentist in 10 years and finally had to go because of a terrible toothache. My teeth were in a pretty bad state, I needed to have the really bad one extracted and I need fillings in pretty much all the others :o(

But my dentist was lovely. I explained when I went that I hadn't been to the dentist for a long time and I knew I should have gone much earlier and I knew my teeth were in pretty bad shape. He just said not to worry and that we would try to fix them up, and that's what we're in the middle of doing now. If your dentist shouts at you, find a new one.

If you have a horrible dentist, try and get a differenrt one.
Explain you are really scared of the dentist and so have avoided it for 10 years. You regret it and know you need some attention.
I'm sure it will be fine this time round.

no absolutly not , there are many reasons people stay away from dentist, you just have to find one you can trust , and when you do visiting your dentist will be like waking up in the morning.
It is very important to go now even though you have not seen one in a while to try to keep as many of your natural teeth in as long as possible, because once you take one out "it's gone" and you lose bone and makes eating (later in life ) very difficult. Teeth start moving and spaces occur, who wants that? so , go ahead make the appointment today. You might be suprised

Dentist are there to help. So they will never shout at you. Plus they love people like you. Its people like you that make money for the dentist. To them you are like a bag of money... So just go in there and smile and they'll smile back. No worries. Best of luck to you.

Alicia, it seems as if dentists have had this whole thing tied up since Moses parted the Red Sea, doesn't it? Many charge exhorbitant fees for fairly simple and straightforward restorations, and too many of them "give attitude." Usually a bad one, and usually directed at the patient, of all people. Intimidation and sarcasm and God knows what else can be expected, but there are ways to dismantle this ugly configuration around putting your teeth in top condition so you can smile and not freak out. I have had poor teeth since I was a child, and I have met all kinds of dentists over the years. Some would grab my skull and pin it under their arm while they worked away. At first this was comforting, but as the work got more complicated, the dentist would become more determined, it would beome more claustrophobic, and time for a change of pace. I have known dentists who lecture. I have known a dentist who keeps his mouth shut and does beautiful work. He takes you just the way you walk through the door, and leaves his sarcasm and intimidation in his office where he regains his peace of mind and sanity between clients. Dentists. Anyway, your job, (Mission Impossible) "if you choose to accept it," will be to go on the hunt for a good dentist. Preferrably a new one if the one you now have is prone to arrogant lecturing and making you feel uncomfortable, generally, and then charging you money for it. I have not yet, at 63 yrears old, been able to find one who will charge sensibly. They charge by the hundreds of dollars, instead of by tens. You know the work they did cost about thirty-two dollars, but you have to pay three hundred for it. It is enough to give you pause. It is not surprising to this writer why people might put off going to the dentist. I wish you success in finding a new dentist. Smile, forget your cavities for a moment, and walk in the opposite direction. Ask your friends to comment upon their dentists, and direct the conversation so you can find out about their approaches. What I am hearing in your original question is a fairly bright individual who wants to keep her teeth in good shape, but who has simply tired of her dentist's bad manner at chairside. Remember that dentists are under rather incredible stress levels. How would you like to spend the rest of your life looking into people's mouths? See? Like that. I am sending this to you with a load of good energy and I hope you find a great new dentist before August. At the rate of one or two treatments per visit, by Christmas of this year, you will feel a huge weight has been lifted off your shoulders, and when you smile in the mirror, you will not also wince. Take good care now, from Chris in South Portland, Maine, U.S.A.

If a dentist yelled at a patient, the patient could sue him or her. The dentist will just tell you to go to the dentist more often, make sure you brush at least twice a day, floss, give you a free toothbrush, make another appointment with you, and tell you to not eat so many sugary things.

Hopefully he won't shout at you. That would be rude. Just tell them you have been weary of dentists and you don't mean that against him/her.

Now is as good time as ever to go get your teeth taken care of. I say this because it's been about 8 years since I went and I just recently went b/c of a broken tooth. I had to have it removed and I figured that I want to keep the rest of my teeth, so I'm going to continue to go. Now is a good time to start.

And my mouth feels better. If he yells at you, yell back. You don't deserve that. You're paying him to help you.

Settle down you are paying the bill.
No lectures just professional discussions about what you should do to keep your teeth now that you have decided to get to the dentist.
The dentist should be happy you came because he will stay busy.
Incidentally ten years is unacceptable. Not a lecture. just a fact.
Keep your teeth you are going to need them.
