According to one source, currently it is Cabernet Sauvignon with over 10,000 acres planted. But, another sources claims it to be Chardonnay. It probably varies by year. Napa actually has less than 2300 acres of Zinfandel planted, less than Pinot Noir, Sauv Blanc, Merlot, and Chenin Blanc, according to the source below. Perhaps they import much of the Zin used for that pink stuff?

Do you actually have an answer to this and are just posing the question to see how many others know the answer? I can't find any actual statistics myself in any of my wine textbooks here but my guess that at least these days it would be Zinfandel since the largest amount of wine coming out from California is the combination of Zinfandel and White Zinfandel.
If you actually have the answer, I wouldn't mind hearing it to see if I was right.
