A 1980's with low mileage would be the best bet.

The newer high mileage car as long as it was mostly driven on highways at highway speeds. Low mileage can be just as bad or worse than high mileage in some cases. However, I'll have to admit that I'd rather start at 100,000 miles rather than 150,000 miles and I'd plan on having to replace the transmission before I got to 150,000 miles. Remember, in a 1980's car you've got a lot of old outdated technology and poor safety standards. US cars in particular were known for poor quality during the 80's. Finally, their gas mileage is probably lower too.

id go with newer as well. a car sitting since the 80's is probably bad news from my experience. unless you are looking for those style points, a new car that has been well maintained with mostly highway miles is my choice. Consider having a mechanic look at any car you buy from a consumer.
