Your dog needs socialising. the trouble with dogs that bark at other dogs is that their owners tend to keep them away from the dogs they bark at, or other dogs they may come into contact with. This effectively means that your dog never gets close to or has encounters with other dogs. Your dog thinks he is the boss and is warding other dogs off. Take him to a dog training class and they will show you how to deal with this and to socialise him, also how to teach him to ignore other dogs. If there is no dog training school in your area, give this a try: When you are out with him and see a dog approaching be ready to react, as soon as your dog first barks. Take the lead and jerk it hard and quickly towards you, saying 'NO' firmly, then let the lead go loose again. If he continues to bark, repeat the process. If you can give your dog a shock by pulling his lead and disciplining him by saying No, so that he knows you mean it. He will remember this and begin to hesitate when he sees a dog and is going to bark. (but you must surprise him) and don't expect it to work straight away, it may take a little time, so dont give up.. Another trick that can work is if you dog likes to chase balls etc.Have a ball in your pocket when you are out with him. When you see another dog approaching get out the ball and get his attention on it by bouncing it, or intimating you are going to throw it for him. This will take his interest off the other dog and keep it on you, until the other dog has passed. when it has passed by praise your dog. If on the other hand none of these two suggestions work and if your dog is really aggressive puling and barking, and ignores the ball or your attempt to discipline him then you really do need the help of a trainer. Good luck!

I had the same problem with one of my dog as well when I first adopted it. What I did was when I saw another dog coming I would try to get her focused on ME. I always had treats ready in my hand. I was told by a trainer to make her sit and lay down when another dog was coming and have a treat in my hand. So when we saw oncoming people/dogs I would have her sit and then lay down. I would have her look at me since I had a treat in my hand and if she barked I would tell her no! and when she stopped barking I would then praise and treat her. It takes time and consistency. Now when we walk together she will lay down to greet another dog. I also have her sit when cars are coming towards us because before she would try to chase them. Now she does it without me asking her. There are many techniques though this one just happened to work for me. It's great because even now when she is off leash when a car is coming she immediately sits and waits for it to pass, along with dogs and people. Good luck! it's just about finding what works for you. :D good luck!

He wishes to play and meet others. If it seems like a friendly bark let the dog go to the other dogs and if its a mean bark quicklly take it away froim the other dogs. For then the other dogs could get injured

While your dog is on his leash he is more pron to be agressive because he want's to protect you as much as he can. Dont worry if you take him off the leash he should be fine with other dogs. Also while he is barking at other dogs look at his tail! If it is wagging it is more likely to be a "hi how are you doing" bark, If the tail is straight and not wagging then it is a "stay away from my owner" type of bark.

Listen to his bark, you tell if it is a "oh i see another dog, and want to play" bark, or a "I see another dog coming near my owner/territory and that makes me mad" kind of bark. He may just be protecting you, or himself. My dogs are very territorial. They hate other dogs in their home, they bark, nip and growl at them. But outside the house, at a vet's office, they are normally shy, and scared of other dogs. They weren't socialized very well. this may be the problem with your dogs. or else he he is trying to socialize with other dogs.

Sounds like your dog has not been properly socialized with other dogs. Get some information on how to do that.

he may want to play with the dogs, or if he is a male and not neutered, and the other dogs are also male, he cud just be getting territorial, or maybe he's like my dog. he thinks he's human and he's a peoplepuppy :-)
