You received the Holy Spirit the day you accepted Christ.

Eph 1:13 In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation--having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise

Speaking in tongues is a gift of the Spirit. Read 1 Cor 12 for more information. Please know that these gifts are given by the will of the Spirit, not by our own endeavors to obtain them. If we could "purchase" them, they would not be gifts at all. Usually they come as we grow and abide in Christ, to help others or for God's glory. They can be a one-shot deal or continual, depending totally upon the will and grace of God.

You pray and pray and ask God to give you the Holy Ghost. You don't learn how to speak in tongues. God gives the utterance.
Act 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
God is the Spirit.
I've had the Holy Ghost for almost 3 years. It gets better and better each day.

First you must pray. In prayer accept Jesus Christ as your personal saviour. Confess your sins and repent of those sins. Once you have openly prayed for Jesus, then ask for the Holy Spirit to work in you or through you for a specific or indirect purpose. If you truly have accepted Jesus, the Holy Spirit will work wonders in your life.

As for speaking tongues, that is a whole different ball-game. Some devout Christians never come to understand tongues. That is a direct gift of God that he does not appoint to everyone. There are times during prayer that I will spurt off a few words that I don't even understand, but I have felt better after speaking them. I would hardly claim to be an interpreter of tongues though.

When you believe that Jesus Christ died on the cross as a substitue for you, and took your sins upon Himself, and rose again 3 days later, you are saved, and are filled with the Holy Spirit. When you sin, you are no longer controlled by the Holy Spirit, so you name your sins to God the Father, and the Holy Spirit will resume command.

The gift of Tongues does not exist anymore. It went out in 70 a.d. Its purpose was to warn Israel that they were about to be destroyed-and Rome did it! (when someone from an African click-speaking tribe who has never heard your language before starts talking to you in your language, I bet you'll sit up and listen too). Anybody today who says they speak in tongues is B.S.ing. They're having an emotional response. Their "tongues" benefits nothing in the spiritual life--they get nothing out of it, and anyone who hears them gets nothing out of it, b/c they're just babbling, and making random noises, like: "larfiuoNEFO JKAEFOIjwo v lngoigna." If you can pronounce that, you're doing the same thing they are (I just pounded the keyboard...don't think I'm sending a message or anything).

Another possiblity of a tongues-speaker is that of demon-possession. My pastor calls them "Engastromuthos demons": demons who take control of the vocal cords (this did happen in the Bible) and say stuff (could be 'prophecy', could be stuff a human could not possibly know, like about dead people).

Do not get into the tongues-movement. Get into a church that actually teaches THE BIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You don't "receive" the gifts now. Back in the old days Jesus and the apositals had the power to deliver the spirtual gifts, but that is not the case today - also you don't "learn" to speak in tongue - some 'claim' to have the gift, but speaking in tongues is just speaking in any other language as long as at least one person can interpt what you are truely saying.

Go to the Alter, and pray with those around you...

If your really sincere enough, you will recieve the "Holy Spirit". You will only speak in tongues, if there is some one to "translate" it for you, because if there isnt, then you are being like madmen, and it serves no purpose.

I wish you well..

Jesse

Continue to pray asking God to fill you with HIS Spirit. Make sure you are in a good church -- that is spirit filled. Ask God to lead you to the right congregation so that you can learn in truth about God and His spirit.

The fact that you say that speaking in tongues can be learned, would make me wonder if that is what is being taught in the congregation where you attend. Seek God concerning being in a church where you can learn and grow in HIM.

Continue to seek God and His Righteousness-- and all these things will be added. Keep seeking HIS Face.

According to Acts 2:38, the Holy Spirit comes as a gift to those who have "repented" and been "baptized in Jesus Christ's name."

Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. (NIV)

Paul refers to this as the mystery of "Christ in You" which is our only hope of living for God's glory. (Colossians 1:27)

The act of speaking in tongues is one of the spiritual gifts given to those who have been given the Holy Spirit. Corinthians lays out further guidlines for the practice and use of spiritual gifts including "speaking in tongues." Though the practice of speaking in tongues is largely debated amongst denominations, the belief of its purpose (to build up the community of believers) is hard to debate. (not that some haven't tried)

Wherever this is gift is practiced...believers must consider whether it is fulfilling its purpose of supporting and encouraging others, and promoting God's glory.
However, It is often misused as the only evidence that a person has recieved the Holy Spirit. [which is difficult to prove biblically]

Don't eat for three days. Rotate for 30 times. Throw your hands in the air and scream Hallelooooya three times.

Very difficult to speak in your tongue as it lacks vocal chords.
