Well, Criminology would be the best major for you. Criminal Justice as a major, focuses on the system as a whole, ( I am a CJ major, I graduate in a month!) I learned a lot about law enforcement, the court system, and corrections. But if you know that you want to be a detective I would suggest you look into criminlogy, which is the study of criminals. Or if you wanted to specialize in a certain area you could major in psychology and take elective classes in forensic psychology so you could be a profiler. Or you could study accounting if you wanted to investigate money trails, bank accounts etc.
I dont think that you need a degree in a specific area to be a detective in a P.D. or S.O. as long as you have one.... But the FBI is a little more picky, there are certain degree fields that are favored, and given more weight when they are considering applicants. Try going to WWW.FBI.GOV and going to careers, it will tell you alot more than I am able to....
Hope that helps, good luck in school!

Something which is not widely know about applying for the FBI. It USED to be that if you applied in a certain location, you could NEVER be assigned to that location as an agent, for fear you might run into people you know in the course of your duties. I don't know whether or not that is still the case, but if you put in an app, it might be worth a trip to somewhere else in the country to do it. For the FBI, I would say pre-law. Swat is generally a matter of, umm, "talent", not college major. Homicide detective-also largely ability in investigating, and in all the places I know of, you have to start as a patrolman and work your way up through the ranks, but probably Criminalistics would be good. Criminal Justice majors are sort of a dime a dozen, and it is not generally "technical" enough to assist you in getting into Homicide.

Yes if you want to be part of the FBI, you should look into
a law degree, an accounting degree, or a computer engerning or science degree .
Ot be a SWAT or homocide detectitive you will need to be a police officer and get 5 to 10 years experience as a street officer first and there often a mangement degree is a good one.
Having prior military is also very good for SWAT ( they will want special forces and/or marine) with a college degree.

First of all, thinking that you need to attend college to be a detective or to work for the FBI or SWAT is a bunch of crap. Most people in these fields have had several years of prior law enforcement experience, which qualifies them for the job. They don't get college credits to qualify them. Don't get me wrong, college is great, and can be helpful and beneficial in your resume and can be beneficial on the job, but, most people like this start out as a little insignificant beat cop patrolling the streats and that's where you get the know how and the skills you develop to get where you want to ultimately be. If you want to specialize in some sort of extra ordinary field for the agency, then college might help, but within the FBI for example, there are several people who work there, but are not sworn and are merely civilian personnel who are "experts" in particular fields of interest.

If you want to be a really good detective, it is best you have some knowledge in criminal justice. Also, a detective should have an inquisitive mind as to human behavior, so I would encourage classes in psychology. In some respects, being a good detective is being able to take tips/hints and "guess" what would come next. Being able to read people well, or the tips they leave behind, to get to the next step, would be a good skill to have. Good luck in your endeavors!

Go to your local college or community college and see what courses you would have to take. The are differences between law enforcement and investigators or even jailer courses.SWAT will depend on your physical abilitymostly, but also check with FBI website to see what are the requirements and age limits to see how much time you have to apply.

If you want to be a detective or something like that, I would suggest getting a degree in criminal justice or something like that. A law degree would be good if you wanted to become a lawyer, but a Criminal Justice degree is great if you wanted to be in law enforcement.

from what I've heard, many FBI agents have law degrees. They get their degrees, then apply to the Academy in Quantico. Crimonology would probably be good too, especially because it covers the actual field. Good luck!
