first thing i gotta tell you is that getting any one a dog/ puppy as a gift is a really bad idea. i did that once for my bf and he was pissed and we had to take her to the shelter. second how old is your niece and did you ask her parents if it was ok? i looked at the pound once and it was going to cost me 100 dollars for the dog and when i told them is was for a gift they told me that firt they would have to do an animal abuse report, have my landlords permission, they wanted an ok from the person i was buyin the gift for, and also they wanted to do an in home inspection of our property, plus a note from a vet saying that they are your primary vet. Now if your niece is old enough and lives by herself and you have problem going through all of this and she is well off that she can afford the pup, then by all means go ahead, but maybe you should take her with so she can gett the breed and pup that she really wants. now if she is living at home make sure her parents agree to this first since im sure they are the ones who are going to be paying the pups bills, and have them all decide on a certain breed, then definatly get one from the shelter because those dogs need homes before the ones in the paper since they are the ones that will be put to sleep if they are not bought. good luck and please never suprise any one with a puppy, its a very bad idea.

There are 6 major places to look
(1) Humane society / dog pound?
(2) The newspaper and other small papers that sell things such as Nickel Ad. etc either by looking in the animal for adoption section or by putting a advert. for wanting to adapt a puppy
(3) The local animal shelter
(4) Look in the phone book and call the local vets (all the vets in your area) and ask them. They normally have a idea of new born litters.
(5) Use the yellow pages and call the groomers and ask them.
(6) Front of all major stores (this is not usually a good adea since people normally sell the puppies cheap rather then give then up at store fronts or street corners)
Its just to bad that you are so far away, There are lots of puppies here around our town in need of good homes.
Well good luck in your search. Take care.

The only way to get a free puppy now a days is to get one from someone whose dog had a litter. If you go to a shelter there is like a $25.00 donation as the dog has been spade or neutered. So I'd check the papers and you'll find some in the pets section.

Check your local paper for free puppies! Good luck. Animal shelters usually require a fee for adoption to help feed the animals.

Does your city have a humane society? Thats where I got my kitten and he is the sweetest thing you will ever meet..If not...you could put an add in the newspaper for a puppy.... Or a local pet groomer orvet might know a place! Good Luck!

A local animal shelter can help. The puppy may not be free, but
you should get a good price for a local pup. Good Luck.

I personally believe that if you can't afford to purchase an animal then you can't afford to take care of one. Dogs can get quite expensive with vet checks, food, toys, vaccine tags, etc...and most important is the fact that they demand and need ALOT of time and attention.. think real hard before you make a committment to a hopefully life long companion!!

Good luck..

If you don't want to pay anything for it, you don't want a puppy. Animals can be expensive. You have to pay for food, get their shots ($90), medicine when they are sick, carpet cleaning and potty training equipment. Trust me if you don't have money right now, you don't need a dog. It will be bad for the dog too.

usually you can adopt a puppy from the humane society but it still cost alot of money so check in the classifieds of your newspaper under pets and see what you can find
