1776 we declared our independence, but was not officially recognized as independent by the wrold until after the Revolutionary War. This recognition occured through the Treaty of Paris 1783.
But even still, we were not the United States of America even then. We were a confederation of semi-autonomous state nations until the Constitution which established our current government (and the United States of America) was ratified in 1788 and the US was established the year after in 1789.

I wouldn't count it official until the revolutionary war was over. all the declaration was, in 1776, was basically just a piece of paper with some useless signatures saying "hey guess what guys? we're a bunch of whiners and we don't want to play with you anymore"
