Spirits refer to alcohol that is being turned into whiskey. In the barrel some of the alcohol evaporates through the wood, hence the alcohol is taken by the spirits.

So spirits are barrel aged alcohol, alcohol is generally just that, IE Vodka.

spirits is the odorless, colorless fermented liquid before it becomes alcohol. the alcohol is the after product - (hops and barley added) or whatever the producer decides to throw in the spirits.
