Does anybody have any reliable and legit. source that links the manic phase of bipolar disorder with an abnormally high IQ?
Personal experience has me around 155-160 hypomanic and 10-15 points lower during a somewhat normal period of time? I have taken 2 or 3 seperate tests at both times.. They are about the same range each time and in each seperate phase. Is this normal/abnormal..?? Serious responses only, please.

Thanks everybody.. I am impressed with the links and especially the intelligent answers. Just to clarify.. during a full manic phase.. I was just a bumbling babbling scatterbrain.. thanks to meds.. I haven't been there for a long, long time :) It is the area between 'normal' and manic that I am referring to .. or typically hypomanic in those with bipolar 2..

Some of the current research suggests that there is a link in Bipolar I and II and cognitive deficits.

IQ tests include confidence intervals. These are meant to control for error, different evaluators, and other external variables (insomnia, test location, etc). A 95% confidence interval means that your true score will fall within that range 95% of the time or 95 out of 100 times taking the test. The confidence interval could range 10-15 points.
So, if your IQ was 127 in a "normal" state, the 95% confidence interval may be 117-132. Meaning, that 95% of the time, your IQ will fall within that range. So, it is possible that your IQ coincidentally fell on the high end of that range when you were hypomanic, but somewhere in the middle or at the low range in "normal" states.

I don't have a reliable and legit source - just a theory. First, I have been tested with a higher than normal IQ - but nothing like yours.

I also have been hypoglycemic since birth, until 2002, when (I think due to a feminine hormone shot) I switched to diabetes.

If my theory is correct, hypoglycemics have more sugar available to their brains - giving the brains more fuel, thus higher IQ. This may relate to the manic phase.

When the brain realizes it is getting too much sugar, it asks for more insulin production, which can overproduce, and pull too much sugar out of the bloodstream, resulting in too little sugar to the brain (also weight gain), possibly initiating the low of the bipolar.

If your doctor is willing to test you for high insulin, you may want to test my possibly wacky theory out.

If you want basic information on low blood sugar, check out www.hufa.org.

Wow! Sorry but I can't help responding although I have no answer. My sister is bi-polar and very bright. Never noticed a difference, except that, of course, when she's deressed, you could not tell about her IQ cause she's barely amongst the living. My daughter is bi and on meds that stabilize her a lot. I wonder if I can or she can synchronize her manic phases with her tests!

I don't think it's as much an actual difference in IQ numbers (in what the tests show)- though of course when you get depressed your mind does slow down. I think it's a matter of creativity. Hypo-manic people are extremely creative, though full blown mania can send you in so many directions at once that you can't accomplish a thing!

Serious rechearch iis underway but not finished yet....if ever.

Experience tells 'us' it needs a 'big brain' to get bipolar.

A normal brain would just go 'normally mad' and would not bother with this complexity.
