I was a aircraft mechanic (AD) in the Navy as well as a rescue swimmer. I have just recently gotten out, but to answere your ? it is possible to be sent over there it depends who he is stationed with if it is a squadron and what not, but I would say there is a chance not a huge one though.

There are Navy squadrons flying out of bases in Iraq right now. It may be unlikely, but the answer is yes.

The navy doesn't need many(if any at all) personnel on the ground since they maintain there A/C onboard ship. But USA/USMC have to maintain the aircraft they have in-country, using aircraft mechs on the ground at their ad-hoc airbases.

If they are sending aircraft it is certain that they will send support staff with them. My ex husband was a crew chief in the airforce and any time his squadron went he went.
