We did our den that had ash paneling. You definitely want to fill all of the groves and low spots with dry wall mud and then sand and seal with Kiltz or similar primer.

We just put dry wall mud over the entire surface and scraped the majority off with a 12" dry wall trowel then gave it a light sanding. Even with this we noticed slight indentations under the wall paper after it was hung and dry. They showed up in the vertical grooves. I'm sure that was because the mud shrank a bit after we applied it and sanded.

Had we not used the mud to fill the grooves, we would really have had a mess. As it was, the small indentations were hardly visible unless you looked closely. If I were to do it again, I would make a second application to the grooved areas to assure a completely smooth surface.

ANYKIND YOU WOULD LIKE. JUST BE SURE TO USE A GOOD SEALER. ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE GOING TO PUT IT IN A DAMP ROOM SUCH AS A BATHROOM.
I HAVE PUT SEVERAL DIFFERENT KINDS OVER PANELING AND HAVE HAD NO PROBLEMS WITH ANY OF THEM. AND I DISAGREE WITH USING ANYTHING TO FILL THE LINES IN THE PANELING FIRST. I DO INTERIOR DESIGN WORK AND HAVE NEVER HAD A PROBLEM WITH ANY LINES SHOWING THROUGH. YOU MUST USE YOUR OWN JUDGEMENT WITH THIS IF YOU ARE DOING THE JOB YOURSELF. I HAVE FOUND OUT THROUGH TRIAL AND ERROR THROUGH THE YEARS. SO, IT'S WHICH EVER WAY THAT "YOU" WILL FEEL MOST COMFORTABLE WITH ABOUT USING ANYTHING TO SEAL THE LINES FIRST. BUT DO BE SURE AND USE A GOOD SEALER!

You must use a "float", "filler" in order to fill and smooth the panel ridges. Then, any wallpaper will do. Be sure to use wallpaper sealer.

I would suspect it doesn't matter, however , you should probably treat the panelling with a primer first. Check with the store to make sure it will work.

That is tricky, but I would only use a highly textured one, no guarantees that the lines of the panneling would not show, (perhaps best to try a small piece firest.) but in my opinion I think it would be the best bet.
