I recently took in a stray that was hanging around my house... she was obviously previously a house-cat as she tried to come inside everytime I opened the door, uses a litter box, and is quite friendly and cuddly for a "stray." I thought she was pregnant because her nipples were quite swollen but they disappeared over the few weeks before I actually took her inside. Once I brought her in I bathed her, and I noticed some little black dots around her nipples... her nipples are quite protruded, but she is not producing milk/nor are her milk glands swollen. The nipples look quite dry and the black dots are on every nipple, but more so on the lower ones towards her hind legs.
I have another cat who is up-to-date with her shots and I just found the same black dots on her nipples, so now I'm quite worried. Is this just "feline acne" that I have read about, or the way cats' nipples are, or something else? What can I do to treat it?

Most often, "feline acne" presents on the cat's chin or face. Kitties do get blackheads (just like we get on our faces - yuck!) on their abdomen, and it wouldn't be unusual for her to have some on her nipples.

If the dots aren't raised or don't seem to be a firm mass secondary to the nipple, odds are good it's just hyper-pigmentation (like the little moles we get on our skin). Our cat developed some spotting on his lips and gums after he turned about a year old - nothing to worry about, just an aging change.

If she does have 'kitty blackheads', it's not contagious, so your other cat may have had these spots and you just never noticed them before. The blackheads don't cause any problems, so there's no need to intervene medically.

If the spots appear to cause irritation or change in size or color abruptly, take her into your veterinarian when you get a chance. They don't sound like anything serious, so I think she'll be okay.

That's really great to hear, by the way, that you brought in a kitty and gave her a great new home! Good for you! I'd run her into your vet to make sure she's been spayed and doesn't have any microchipping or anything that would indicate she's got other owners out searching for her. Best of luck with your new feline friend!

freckles or moles you usually don't see them because cats have fur but I am sure it is nothing to worry about.
