personally I think that the opium can be anything that causes a person not to think and question and just blindly follow
for most religion is the opium but for some it is the catalyst to creative and deep tough and development.

Mark was spot on with this one.
Religion is used to maintain the status quo, any free thinking that might lead to the prolateriat becoming aware of their oppression at the hands of their bourgeois masters is treated as heresy and wiped out. It also goes a step further and justifies the oppression-its god's will that some are poor whilst others are rich.

The spiritual need of our nature is just as real and viable as our physical or emotional needs. Religion is man's way of fulfilling that need in the same way as food, shelter and love fulfill our other needs. In the sense that anyone can become "addicted" to food, love, etc, so that is true of religion. As to induce a thoughtless or incoherent state of being, if that is your inference, that is an incorrect assumption. In fact, non-religious people still sense a lack of something in their lives and try to fill it with excesses in other areas, including drugs. Not all religious people have that sense of fulfillment either, exploring other paths and philosophies to find the answer to their spiritual need. Both of these groups of people are not sedated, but are actively searching for ways to satisfy their need. I have found, along with millions of others, that the only rest to be found is in the person of Jesus Christ. He is the way, truth and life. We can only be made whole and complete through Him.

Blessed are the meek they will inherit the earth, was thought by Marx to be used by the upper classes to keep the working class happy with their lot as their reward would be in the afterlife.

Ask Karl Marx! Napoleon Bonaparte stated, " Religion is what keeps the poor man from murdering the rich. "

No. I think it is more like alcohol. Opium is a relaxant, alcohol often triggers stupidity and violence.

I don't really know what this phrase means, but if it means what i think it means, then it is true, some people feel as though they can't live without it, but they need to force it onto other people too, a bit like peer pressure. :)
