OK - each man put in 10 pounds and got 1 back (so now they each contributed 9 pounds), but the TV didn't cost 27 pounds (9x3), it costs 25 pounds, so there is NOT a pound left over...there are TWO pounds left over. Each man ended up paying 9 pounds (equalling 27 pounds), and the sales man kept the 2 extra (after paying 25 pounds for the TV). So 10x3=30-3 (1 pound to each man)=27-2 (that the sales man kept)=25. It all works out. See?

With a price of $25, each man pays 8.333333333333etc. They are each given back $1, the salesman keeps $2. So one guy got stuck paying a few cents more to round of the $8.3333333333333..... . together their $1= $3 + The salesmans $2 = $5. Add in the $25 price of the T.V. and it = $30. Each man did NOT pay $9(that would make the price $27).There is NO missing dollar.

No where, the TV essentially cost 27 pounds.(25 plus the 2 the store owner kept). The 3 men each paid 10 pounds (30 total) and the store keeper gave them back 3 pounds. (1 to each man).

30 - 27 = 3

You subract the 2 pounds from the cost of the TV not add it.
9x3=27 - 2 =25 The guys thought the tv was 27. The problem is you are looking at the old price of 30 and not the new price of 25.

You said he gave each man a £1 each which would have to include himself because he is one of the men. 3 men = £3. £5 - 3 = £2 left to keep.

The Sales Man Took It Because He Accepts Tips

they initially pay 30.

the boss asks the salesman to return 5 ['cause the real cost is 25].
so they get paid back 1 each by the salesman i.e. the money they paid becomes 25+3 [28].

& the salesman keeps the 2.

so. 28+2=30.
& there's no missing money!

This is a old riddle.
cost 25
spend 27
sales man 2
Total cost to the buyers 25+2 = 27

paid = 30
returned=3
cost=25
sales man=2
25+3+2 = 30

cost to those people is 25+2(sales man)=27
why should you add 2 of sales man again to 27 !!!!!!!!!
