If its a dry coconut, with the outer skin removed, then puncture the holes, and drain out the water, then break it.
If it has nectar, (tender coconut) and the husk has not been removed, then dehusk the top portion and use a small knife to puncture a hole big enough for a straw, or pour. Then use a sharp knife to cut off the cap, scrape off the cream inside and eat it.
In India, many coconut vendors use sharpened and honed hacksaw blades (a cloth is tied to the base to act as a handle), which really works well in slicing open even the tough coconuts.

Puncture the eye to get the milk/water out, then use a clean hacksaw to slice it in half. That way leaves you two neat halves so you can reuse the shell for birdfeeders, or for clippy cloppy play horses. Be very careful to secure the nut in a vice before sawing though

With a machete if it's whole. If it already has the green part removed I take the water out though one of the eyes and then throw it against the floor to crack it open.
