THe Bible says not to murder. Murder is different from killing. What I am trying to figure out is what are some situations where killing would not be murder and would therefore be acceptable. (ex. self-defense)

If you are part of the legal system and required to administer the death sentence as part of that system, you are not a murderer. If you are a soldier fighting a war, you are not a murderer. If you kill someone who is in the act of causing fatal harm to your loved one, you are not murdering.

Murder is in the heart and mind, even according to our laws in the States. It is the intention and plan to kill, not for self-defense or war. It is why we say that alcoholics who drink and drive are intentionally killing someone if they get into an accident and kill some innocent person. Although they did not go out that night intending to kill someone, by their actions of drinking and driving, even knowing that could lead to someone's death, they do it anyway.

The Bible actually says "Thou Shall Not Kill." Modern ultra-conservatives tend to twist the meaning around as an excuse to justify war.

If you actually read and understand the teachings of Christ, the Man our whole faith is supposed to be based on, then you would know that Christ gave no one permission to either kill or murder.

No one has the moral right to either kill or murder.

But the Bible also says an eye for an eye so if someone was killed in self-defense it should be ok,but what about someone that defiles a child? I know I would harm someone if they did thta to my children or grandchildren

Clearly self defense is forgivable.

you can go on a killing spree if it is government approved, or church approved, but make sure to kill in a manner prescribed by them

Killing a rapist or a child molester would not be murder but only if caught in the act.

Thou shalt not kill covers it. Killing in any form is not acceptable. I would think that when you are in imminent danger and had no other recourse, God would forgive you.
