My husband has year old beer in the basement that he wants to pull out for our BBQ this weekend, I say it is too old and we should dump it. He says it is still good and we should use it. Who is right?

Most commercial beers will not last more than 6 months. Some of the stronger beers like imperial stouts, belgians, and barleywines need to age for a year before they start to get good. If you are going to serve the beer make sure it is very cold, and the people are slightly drunk.

It depends on a lot of variables...temperature, oxygen, bacteria, and alcohol content determine how long a beer will last. Old beer will not hurt you (in moderation), it will just taste/smell bad.
Temperature: Do not store any beer above 55 deg F or below 32 deg F. High storage temperatures will accelerate the following variables.
Oxygen: Oxygen that is introduced into the beer during production eventually causes the beer to go stale. This is usually first noticed as a cardboardy taste.
Bacteria: This should not be a problem in commercial beers but is a common problem in homebrew and gets worse over time and higher storage temperature.
Alcohol Content: The higher the alcohol content, the longer the shelf life. Styles such as Bock contain about twice the average alcohol content or 6-7%. Some styles such as Barley Wine can reach 12%.
Bottom Line: If it tastes/smells good, drink it.
Cheers!

There are beers designed for long term storage and get very complex with time. These tend to be the "bigger" beer styles like barleywine.
Spaten Pils may not last, but their Bock just might.
Let him keep the beer anyway.... You gotta love a guy that plans for his 10th Anniversary the day after his wedding!

I think you are right, you should only keep beer that is less than 6 months. You should get rid of the bear that is 6 months or older. So the beer he wants to drink is probably to old.

If it was kept in a cool dark place there should be no problem. I have had 2 year old beer that was properly kept and it tasted fine - the key is how it was stored. You can always try one and see how it tastes.
