Or, will they settle for Selective Service? This is really nothing new; Thomas Jefferson tried to have it (universal conscription) included in the US Constitution. What are your thoughts on this? Is it an idea whose time has come?

this is not about a militia... the 2nd amendment is the end result of negotiations between Jefferson and the congress. jeffersons idea was: 1) no standing army. 2) A provision making every able-bodied male in the nation a member of a local militia that would be called to serve if ever invaded.
3) A provision making sure every male had a weapon handy if an attack occurred. what we got from that is amendment 2.

My doubts. The congress and senate will not bring this up in an election year. The left (Democrats) will to try and scare people into voting for them. They will say the Republican government can't recruit enough soldiers for Iraq and other needs to get the job done and force a draft. They won't use the word selective service or universal conscription -they will use the buzz word draft.

I don't know why people think the draft is going to be around any time soon, but it isn't. The military has been meeting its recruitment goals and, in some cases, surpassing them. Furthermore, anyone with the most basic understanding of human psyche will recognize that a volunteer army is MUCH more effective than a conscripted one. The only time the US would institute the draft is in cases of SEVERE threat, such as nukes being lobbed around or homeland invasions.

Not this year or next. It wouldn't happen until Bush's exit strategy--January 2009.

The military is meeting its quota by lowering the quota. Plus the age limit is now 42, and they'll take you if you have a criminal record, or you're autistic. Plus "no ask no tell" is pretty much out the window. The Marines wanted me when I was 19, but an industrial accident rendered me unfit for service. The standards are low enough now that I could go enlist, but I'll be damned if I take a cut in pay and lose my house for Bush's clusterf*ck.

The military is no longer set up to handle training hostile non volunteers, there will never be a draft, especially next year as our troop needs decline, we have met all recruiting goals this year for all branches of the service, higher bonuses and better pay will do the job that a draft cannot.

I wish that people would put in a little thought before asking this type of question.

The military does not need nor want a draft.

The only people who are making noises about a draft are a few Democrat politicians who are trying to frighten fools into voting for them.

There really is no reason to go to drafting. Its just not necessary. People will continue to volunteer for the armed forces. For various reasons from patriotism, a desire to serve their fellow americans, pay, education, travel and.. here's the biggest one... "JOB SECRUITY".

People ask me why I stay in the Navy when I could get out and work for a civilian company doing the same job. Yes, it would be more pay, but in the Navy, I don't have to worry about being laid off. I don't have to worry that I can't feed my family.

If I could join a local militia all my wildest dreams would have come true. Otherwise, I will stick to voting. Militias are for killing, right?
