If you've already gotten into trouble, the WORST thing you can do is get another credit card. Learn to manage on a cash only basis for a couple of years first!

First of all, this way you learn to manage your money and live within your means, plus the older the bad credit is, the less impact it has on your rating. Eventually it will fall off.

Oh..and if you haven't paid off all your old debt, you will need to do that to. Get a copy of your records and start contacting the people you owe money to.

Only when you have your act together, should you talk to the bank about a secured card. That's the safest way to rebuild.

I did it with Capital One--but I did have to pay a fee--but it was the right step. I had a credit score of 420 (really bad ) in 2000 and today I'm above 700.

There are companies who will let you have a credit card but you are using your own money. You pay a lump sum to the company and they give you a credit card for the amount of the lump sum .So if you give them $500.00 then they give you a credit limit for that amount then you make payments and over time it establishes your credit back.Check out the site I have provided for more info.

You can get a secured credit card. You deposit money first to be used on the card. It will build up your credit. Be cautious and do not spend too much once you get your credit rating back.
