VHS is the format presently used on recording and playback of video tapes for your TV. About 15 years ago, there was a competitive market battle between the VHS tape format and Sony's "Beta" format for market domination. The VHS format won and "Beta" tapes cannot be used on your video player/ recorder. They are long gone and useless (except as antiques).
You might have heard about a market battle between the 33 1/3 versus 45 rpm music platter format in "ancient" times. Somewhat the same kind of battle.
