I've been around the Religion & Spirituality section for a while, and it seems that there are a lot of people from all sides, whether Christian, Atheist, Muslim, etc, who aren't respectful of the variety of opinions and variety of people who post here. Why not? Why do these discussions bring out the worst in people? And why do atheist/agnostic types criticize the religious types for intolerance when they're just as bad? (not all, but a lot)

Hey I don't mind... Let everyone speak their mind. If it's negative then let everyone see it. If it's mean, let everyone see who is mean.
Don't be offended.
If a streaker runs down the street. It's no reflection on you. Don't be offended by it.
If someone wants to spew hatred, let them speak and their words will show everyone who is the hater. It's no reflection on you. Don't take it personal. We can all make judgements on who is doing wrong and who is doing right.
They must persuade us to change our minds and we must do the same. If they choose to spew evil, that doesn't sound convincing or inviting for me to agree with them. They won't win any friends or change any minds that way.
You just continue to be nice and you will start to make a difference in the world, one person at a time...

People assign too big importance to their religion/atheism and undervaluate good influence of alive people surrounding them in their education and development, moral values, common for all humans, existing resources. I think religions should be primarily respected as part of peoples history, resource of hope important for survival. But not as some source of absulute truth. What is truth may be felt by people without any religious education; it is more about empathy, experience, full analysis.

I really do not agree with fluffdaddy that religion makes kill. Religion may be exploited for some reasons or attributed to events by other people who are allergic to multiculturalism in general (though their public declarations are different). Many killers have been Catholics or other Christians, but nobody called these religions a source of terrorism just because of a number of criminals in prisons. Because they were a part of majority religion in their countries... Power relations between majority/minority, rich countries/poor countries.

Great question. While some people from all backgrounds and beliefs show amazing respect toward others, I agree with you that there is more attacking going on than anything else.

How can we ever have peace in the world if we simply defend our own opinion and beliefs while putting down those of others?

Learn about religions other than your own. You might find you will learn to admire the practices and traditions of others while at the same time growing in appreciation of your own.

Ahhhh a sensitive one...I like that very much. I think it's because some people aren't secure enough in what they believe and they have to cover that up by trying to tear someone else apart. Some of the questions are honest questions, and they are really beautiful...but the dishonest questions are really sad...and the people asking them...hmmmm....I think I'll stop here.

because they are hiding behind a PC,its ironic that there is hostility on a sublime subject like religion, the lack of respect shows how shallow and false the beliefs their arguing about really are ,sad people making interesting topics sound like nonscience

Show me a time in history when all of the different religions DID get along with out trying to kill one another. I'll take a little arguing over war and killing anyday.

I second this thought. How ironic that the supposed spirituality discussions are every bit as vicious as those in the politics section.

People dont like to be told their way of living life is wrong, so when someone points out something that reflects that, they get defensive and use any means to cast a shadow on that point of view.

there is truth and there is falsehood. the idea that everybody is right is an unintelligent one. Our societies are run by laws and principles. God is one, not three, not a trinity, not a man! If you knew that someone was building an atomic bomb that would destroy humanity, wouldn't you be against that person? So its no different. The pagan Trinity Idea is what has created atheism and is destroying humanity

Because people constantly question our beliefs.

It's not enough to state your beliefs anymore. Now, the whys, wheres and hows must be microscoped in minutia.

I don't care what others believe/don't believe. If they're happy, more power to them.
