I have a short haired Jack Russell Terrier. Will long periods of sun exposure cause sunburn? (1-2 hrs)? If so can I use regular sunscreen or is there something special for dogs?

According to petplanet.com they recommend non-toxic sunscreens if you can't keep your dog in shaded areas while outdoors:

"Try to prevent the damage from occurring in the first place. If your dog is white or has a pale nose or ears, buy some sunblock for your pet when you buy your own! You should apply it to the vulnerable spots every day, and more frequently if your dog is outside in the sun for long periods of time. Use a sunscreen that is known to be non-toxic to dogs - your vet will be able to advise you if you unsure. This is because dogs have a natural inclination to lick off anything that is applied to their fur and skin - making non-toxic products vital. It also means that you may need to apply your pet’s sun block several times a day. Your dog may at first be confused or reluctant to allow you to apply the cream, but he will soon get used to the routine. "

Yes, dogs can get sunburned. The post about non-toxic sunscreens is a good one. Go with that. I use baby-formulated sunscreens on my dogs if we are going to be outside for long periods of time.

Good luck!

Dogs can get sunburned just like people. I have a chihuahua that will lay out in the sun all day & get burned it I let him. I have to make sure he gets out of the sun to avoid a sunburn. I think they make suntan lotions that are safe for your dogs. Search the web for a suntan lotion that will be safe in case he or she licks it.

If he's white and there are areas where skin is easily seen, yes I think he could get sunburned. I had a white cat who had this problem with his ears. We used normal 45 SPF for babies. I'd ask the vet if there are alternatives if you are going to put it where the dog may be able to lick himself.
