Contrary to popular opinion, wine is not necessarily fermented. The MODERN usage does define wine as fermented grape juice.

In Biblical times, though, there was

yayin - grape juice in all its stages from unfermented to fermented, though it is usually used for fully aged wine that contains alcohol (O.T.)
tirosh - unfermented (and sometimes partially evaporated) grape juice. (O.T.)
Onios - both fermented and unfermented grape juice (N.T)
shekar - "strong drink" - sweet, fermented, and generally made from sources other than grapes.(O.T.)

Based on the actual word used, it may be difficult to determine which type of wine is refered to. In that case, use the contextual clues.

Fermented wine: scripture condemns alcoholic wine because it brings violence, misery, and destruction (Prov. 4:17; 23:29,35). It causes religious leaders to be oppressive (Isa. 56:10 -12) and was associated with the perversion of judgement of Israel's leaders (Isa. 28:7) and of King Belshazzar (Dan. 5:1-30)

Unfermented wine: the Bible speaks favourably of unfermented wine and recommends it as a great blessing. It is to be presented as an offering to God (Num. 18:12,13; Neh. 10:37-39; 13:12,13). It is one of God's blessings (Gen, 27:28; Deut. 7:13; 11:14; Prov. 3:10; Isa. 65:8; Joel 3:18), "cheers both God and men"(Judges 9:13) and symbolizes spiritual blessings (Isa. 55:1,2; Prov. 9:2,3). It also is a healthy drink (1 Tim. 5:23).

Based on the above, what type of wine do YOU think Jesus drank and gave to His disciples? And commanded His followers to drink TODAY? Which type of wine represents the shed blood for the redemprion of mankind?

According to what I've interpreted, only the Apostles drank the wine. And by definition, wine has alcohol. The reason for the wine was not only the metaphor or His Blood, but the water back then was not always healthy, and wine was. (Just a little extra tidbit)

The wine was fermented. Wine has been around for long before Jesus was here. It was customary to drink wine or beer back then because the water systems were so polluted. Why?
