New years day 1898, the Sunderland fans set fire to Saint James's Park.
The Newcastle fans sang songs on the burning terrace and the Sunderland fans run away. Hence the song:
Hark now here the Geordies sing and Sunderland ran away.
Newcastle rules forever more, because of new year's day.

Sunderland without a doubt.. The squad is ten times better than Newcastle's.... I know that don't mean anything but like your question it's just speculation so I go on every piece of info I can get...And considering the squads and managers and recent club history...Relegation, manager changes, transfers in & out, Id say that Sunderland are definetely odds on to finish above Newcastle, In fact there's probably about 15 teams in the league that are to be honest....and god help them if they lose Barton they might even find themselves in a scrap for survival.

I think football plays a large part, but doen't it happen in other places too, when two cities are close together.
Personally, I am a Geordie and I don't have a problem with Maccams.
Must say though, I get a strangely nice feeling when the Black cats lose!!!

It dates back to the civil war in the 1600s. Newcastle was royalist and Sunderland was "roundhead".
