I'm normally extremely active, but this is going to force me to basically sit on the couch and rest. I will also be working (as an intern,) I am 16 years old... but one of my goals this summer was to get into even better shape, which I had planned to accomplish through even more running than usual. Since I won't be able to run, I suppose this won't be the end of the world, since I haven't given myself a break basically all year, but now what should I do? How can I lose weight and get into better shape... ideas for meals, etc. I'm eat fairly healthfully as is, but what should I preoccupy myself with now that I can't run? Can I still lose weight even without being able to exercise, so that my ankle can heal? Please help.... it is GREATLY appreciated!

I have torn both achilles before...and yes, that absolutely stops running for a while. HOWEVER...it doesn't stop all exercise. See if you can do the elliptical...its boring...but if you have a TV or music...an hour can go by pretty quickly.
And, if that is not boring enough for you...try water-running. Go into the deep end of a pool and run. It is mind numbingly boring but will give alot of the running muscles a workout without stressing the achilles.
Also, try a "night boot"...it is worn while sleeping and keeps your foot at a 90 degree from your leg...letting the achilles heal in an extending mode rather than "shrinking" or "shortening" overnight.
Lastly...try a foam roller to roll out your calfs and your IT bands and quads. Your phys therapist should know about both boots and rollers...if he/she doesn't....get another phys therapist who is more sports oriented.
If you handle things right, you could return to running not only healed, but stronger and more flexible than before. And THAT would be pretty sweet, wouldn't it??

I've just injured mine too! Someone suggested that I use a sort of boot to wear at night; it keeps the foot at a 90 degree angle so the tendon doesn't tighten up during the night. It really works! I've been using the boot as well as putting ice on it while I'm reclining, and mine's almost better after a few days. It may take yours a little longer to heal because it's all dependent on the individual; some people take a week to heal, others take a month.
Swimming and some light cycling have kept me active while I haven't been able to run. Also, things like weeding outside and planting shrubs burn a lot of calories. Two hours of gardening (moderate effort) is said to burn about as many calories as one hour of light jogging.
As for your meal plan, just eat a healthy diet. Your body will be able to use the calories from healthy meals, and you won't gain weight. But it won't be able to use the calories from sweets and foods high in sugars, thus making excess weight. I eat 6 or 7 small meals a day (three 300 to 400-calorie meals, plus healthy snacks), and it's really helped boost my metabolism. Some good foods for the athlete (and everyone else, really): whole grain tortillas, whole grain breads and pastas, fruits (dried and fresh), lots of vegetables, nuts, a moderate amount of meat, low-fat dairy products.
DON'T try to run through it. Trust me. It may feel all right when you're running, but afterwards, it'll feel like you're dying.
Good luck!

You can still work out, but not do the heavy running like you want to, that would place the heavier burden on it, so do lite walking. As long as you break the 30 mins threshold of working out, you still burning the fat calories, Besides that you still very young, you have the advantage. Metabolism is still in high gear...just becareful not to over do it. also work on different part os you body. I.E. upper body, chest, Abs, Lower back, forearms etc...

Since your down for a while, your going to have to cut your calories a bit. Try just sticking to proteins, veges, fruits & whole grains. Also, try swimming if it's not too hard on you.

You might try swimming or any other type of exercises that does not put any weight or pressure on your injured parts.
