For "How are you", a more idiomatic phrase is "Comment allez-vous?", literally "How do you go."
A less formal version is "Ça va?" which means "Is it going?", sort of like our "What's up?"
Unlike English, French still has the distinction between formal and familiar speech. "Vous" is more formal that "tu". Since you're more likely to say "I love you" to a friend, it would be "Je t'aime", not "Je vous aime."
