Having felt the way you do, myself, I can tell you it is easier if the people who love you know what's going on. I'd imagine they are already aware that you are depressed. They need to know how bad your depression is and that you have been suicidal, attempting it a few times. You can start with something like ... You may have noticed that I haven't been acting like myself lately. I have been feeling down for a long time. Not just blue, but depressed and have tried to commit suicide. I'm telling you this because I need your help. I can't do this alone. ... and go on from there.
If you haven't gotten help for your depression please do so now! You may need medication (short or long term) to lift you up enough for therapy to work. Believe me, it will help!! It helped me. And I couldn't have done it without the loving support of family and friends. And, most importantly, I couldn't have done it without God and lots and lots of prayers. Please remember that suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem.
God bless!

Suicide is an ugly ugly thing. Tell them as soon as possible and get help. Avoid suicide!!!! Its a very selfish act. You will be doing a horrible thing to your friends and family. Life can be wonderful if you let it. There are a ton of things and therapy in the medical world that can help you. Use the internet , there are chat rooms for depression and ppl that might guide you the right way.

Chances are, you won't have to tell them, they will have already noticed a change in your personality and energy level. If you are depressed then you need to see a doctor sometime soon. BUT IF YOU ARE SUICIDAL, you need to see a doctor today. I, too suffered (notice past tense) with depression until I went to the doctor. He prescribed a simple antidepressant that helped me become myself again. There are amazing medications available that have little or no side effects. Now, read this, call the doctor, and call a friend to drive you there. It sounds like you have a strong support system to help you come back to your old self. Although I don't know you, I am so proud of your courage and honesty in getting help for this disease.

It's not your fault. It's an illness like arthritis or pneumonia. It is curable. Are you seeing a Dr. and taking anti depressants? You don't need to tell them about the suicide attempts. The meds and treatments will help you and if your family and friends don't understand, just move on.

Depression is a brain disease, not a flaw in character. You need to get treatment for your depression. Medication and/or therapy can work wonders. There is a wonderful website called mentalhelp.net. On this site is a delightful little book called the depression primer. Hit the second link to go to the Depression Primer. You might want to read this and then share it with your family and friends so they will understand what depression is. Best wishes. Please do not harm yourself. Life with treatment is wonderful.

If you are afraid to tell your family, talk to your physician first. He can recommend a therapist or medication or both. Your primary concern is getting help. If you think your family will be supportive, by all means just tell them. If you are concerned that they may not be supportive, then seek professional advice first, so if they don't help you out, you will already have a support network started. Good luck. Please get help immediately. No matter what your family's reaction, it will be better than hearing you succeeded in killing yourself. I have dealt with depression, and know how it feels. Please, please get help at once.

Pick the one member of your family you are closest to, tell them first. Then when you are ready to tell the rest, if it is necessary!, the one member who already knows can be your support. GL. (from a fellow depression sufferer)

it depends on how well you otherwise communicate with them, but you don't really have to tell them, if you have severe depression you can just talk to a doctor about things if you wish, if you think your family will be supportive and you want that and need that from them then by all means find a way to tell them, just sit them down and have a talk with them
