I'm sure Chinese people don't call it "Chinese" New Year, but they probably celebrate it for the same reason anyone else celebrates a January 1 or non-January 1 "new" year.
Below is a Canadian page regarding Chinese New Year:

Well everyone celebrates the one on January 1st, but we Chinese have our own calender which is about a month behind the one everyone uses, so the Chinese celebrates their New Year around late January to mid-February.

the Chinese calender is based on the lunar cycle not the solar cycle, new year can vary as much as 30 days or more from 1 year to the next.
Don't know when the lunar new year was this year!
