Milkbones are a cheap, easy, and effective way to improve dog breath. I had this problem and changed my dog's food to Science Diet oral care and that helped as well.

First thing you need to know is that bad breath can be a sign of a problem. It could mean that Your "best friend" may have a serious problem. Periodontal Disease is the #1 disease in dogs and bad breath is one sign that your dog may be suffering. It is estimated that 80 percent of dogs the age of three suffer from periodontal disease — a serious deterioration of the gums and supporting bones of the teeth. Left unchecked, the resulting bacteria can enter the dog's bloodstream, causing infection or damage to vital organs such as the kidneys, lungs, heart or liver. That’s why dog bad breath has been the called the "Silent Killer of Pets."
Our "Finny" has had the occasional episode of bad breath and we stopped it by improving his dental hygene, adding more Milkbones, Nylabone, and Greenies and other products that aid in oral hygene.
There are some wonderful products that help keep the dogs mouth in top shape:
Check out this quick link I made for you. The chew toys, brushes and pastes, and chew bones are all great. Stay away from the mints, they just cover up the problem.

Could be the dog has to get the vet to check out the teeth. Tooth decay could cause bad breath and some teeth might have to be pulled.

I don't know how to help you. I've owned dogs most of my 57 yrs and never had one with bad breath. I've never fed them anything other than good dry dog food. I would give them Milk Bones once a day and that's all.

They sell doggie breath mints called yip yaps. You can get them at some grocey stores or the pet store. Or you could just brush his teeth. Don't give him greenies, the green dental bones they have a petsmart. Supposedly they have a hard time digesting them. My dog just pukes them back up.

You can also get your dogs teeth cleaned at the vet. THat with regular dental care ( brushing etc ...) will be a more long term solution. Also make sure your dog isn't eating dead animals, or cat poop etc..when you're not around.
Additionally, I wouldn't feed my dog people food because of the additional sugar can cause cavities etc...

my boyfriends dog had a skin problem and would always "chew" on herself. she would then get her hair caught around her teeth and this would cause the teeth to rot. she got her teeth pulled and some anti-itch shampoo, we changed her food, and her breath is no longer horrible. next time you take your dog to the vet ask him for some advice and tips. good luck to you!
