Because a lie is easier to accept. When we ask for the truth most times what we are asking for is for you to agree with what we are asking about. For example: Do you like my new dress? If you don't like it, are you going to tell me or are you going to find something about the dress that you can mention. "That's a pretty shade of blue." "I like the sleeves."
We don't want to hear what you are thinking..."My goodness, where did she find that ugly thing? It does nothing for her."
These kinds of social lies are true in any area of our lives. If I am married to a bum, do I want you to keep telling me that? No. I know he's a bum but I don't want you to continue to tell me you recognize that I had bad taste in picking a man.
The lie strokes our egos. The truth often hurts.

I don't know what you mean by "a lie, then truth". This means they believed one before the other, but I will assume you mean rather than the truth. Well people believe lies like religion, because they are easier to believe. They are only hard to believe if you think. If you have faith, then you don't need to think. Atheism (truth) is harder to believe for most. Religion gives the simple answer "god did it". Science (offered by atheism) will explain things with fact. Fact is too big for many to handle, so they turn to religion.

I question your premise that it's easier for people to believe a lie. A lie is an intentional deception. If I tell you it's raining outside and honestly believe that it is raining, I haven't lied even if there's not a drop in sight. I've made a mistake. There's a huge difference between a lie and an error.
The main reason people believe real lies, intentional deceptions, is because the liar packages them in a way to make them believable and to appeal to the self interest of the person he is trying to deceive. Most people believe lies simply because they want to believe them.

Because the truth hurts a lot so we prefer to believe a lie to make us feel better.

For the same reasson people who tell the lie did it in the first place. The truth is often hard to swallow. We're all lazy and prefer the pleasant lie to the truth that hurts.

First of all I think its because people can colour up a lie any way they choose. It allows them to pretend they have no fault in the situation. The truth makes us accountable and sometimes that is a hard pill to swallow, and makes for hard work to stand up for. It is for some the easy way out and that is all the effort they want to put into it.

Lies are many times connceted with supportting another's vanity ~ many lies are flattery!
Truth, however is seldom considered beautiful.
Truth many times is looked upon as insulting.
I think that's because too few people speak kind words of truth when they enter their heads.
When you see someone who looks nice -tell them.
When a person does a good job- tell them- pat them on the back!
I practice this and it is a very positive force for good !
Good luck in Building up Truth's pallatablity!
Love ya!

Because believing truth means that you recognize the lie exists, & then you have to find the truth. Plus, once you believe truth, you then have to defend yourself & your position fto those still believing lies.Believing truth requires more work; mentally, spiritually & relationally.
