It sounds like the fear of the unknown....my mother flew for the first time at age 58. She was scared and worried for weeks. My dad told her to relax...no drugs or alcohol...she loved it!

I was on a twelve hour flight to Germany last year and a girl travelling with us was a nervous wreck. I told her to look out the window, just don't look straight down...save that for the trip back. She loved it as well!

Don't worry though. You are not the only first time flyer on that plane. Maybe it'll be comforting to know that in order for the captain to be able to fly that plane with passengers, he needs a minimum of 2,500 hours of actual flying time of a similar aircraft as co-pilot. He's well trained and experienced.

Happy flying!

Email me when you get back and let me know how much you enjoyed it.

A pilot told me this:

Inhale some air and stop. Hold the inhaled air for sometime and the release it slowly.

Be sure that you are not inhaling and releiving the air continously. This will make the things worst.

The purpsose of holding the breath for sometime to hold the carbon dioxide (not oxygen) in the blood which slows the anxiety disorder.

This is a technique in 'PRANAYAM' ....YOGA.

I have found this technique very useful as I travel a lot...earlier I used to enjoy the flights which were tubulent. Then I had a very bad flight when it was really very very turbulent and it seemed that everything is over...the aircraft was flying through rough storm. That made me the opposite than the above, for a while.

Once I spoke to a pilot friend of mine in the cockpit and shared my concern...of wet palms. He laughed...said that he too has a family...and that he want to go home safe. But life is not about running away from these fears. Destiny holds everything..just do your work..don't worry about the future too much by thinking which is not in your hands.Do what is in your hands...and do it best. Read Murphy's Law. Why fear? Live Life King Size...don't worry, be happy.

Then he showed me this technique....that day & I have never felt like a 'frieghtened animal' again.

Go & conquer the world!

Best of Luck!

Treat it like an amusement park ride, make sure you're buckled in whenever you're seated so that you're protected from unexpected turbulence, and know that flying is the safest form of travel that has ever existed in human history. It might help to close your eyes and just enjoy the feeling when the plane takes off, and once you're up in the air pretend that the plane is on solid ground. Know that not every little shake or noise means that the plane is going to crash (highly unlikely), and look at other passengers to see how they are reacting to what is going on. Expect the plane to slow down as it's making its descent; this is to prepare for landing; the plane will not drop from the sky. It might also help to engage in conversation with someone to distract your mind from your surroundings. I'm afraid of heights myself, but I'm able to look out the window during a flight because I know that the physics of flight is keeping me safely in the air.

1) don't sit window seat
2) bring a cd player/an ipod and just put your favorite music on there

if you're of age, some airlines sell alcohol on the plane. maybe take in a drink before or during the flight.

You can go to RadioSchak or any other stores and buy the soothing tapes of raindrops and the natural outdoors. Normally listening to a soft relax music calms most of people who are afraid of planes.

i think the raindrops would make me have to pee about a billion times

i would recommend bringing something that soothes you..your favorite book..stuffed animal from when you were a kid..whatever it takes

music is essential..because there are a lot of noises that can disturb someone with an untrained ear...some soothing music..or a book on tape for example...

just try to bring things on your carry on that you know will make you feel good

your favorite candy could work too..and just convince yourself that flying is so amazingly safe that hundreds of thousands of flights go off every day with no incidents

fly safe hun

Just know that planes are very safe and are piloted by professionals. They are made to fly, and there is nothing to be scared of. I mean, how often do you hear of a plane crash, and how often do you hear of a car crash?
