It depends on the type of dog you are looking for. If it doesn't matter, go to the spca, it will save a dog's life, is usually cheaper, and most of the time the dog has already been neutered with recent shots. With a private owner, you will probably have to pay more for the dog, get it's shots, and neutered if you wish.

A private owner.
There are far too many restrictions and too narrow a view of "proper care" in many spcas which are focused on animal rights than the best interest of that animal. If the animal doesn't find a home because of their restrictions it's 'useful' as a statistic of unwanted animals. Many GOOD homes have been turned down because the people work too much, because the dog will EVER be left alone, because they rent, because they don't have a fenced yard (irregardless of what they DO have - 70 acres and a pen for the dog when they aren't right there with him - which is most of the time!). Seniors have been denied animals because they *might* die before the animal (ummm....so MIGHT someone who is 35!).
There are many puppies advertised here in the papers all the time. They are no less deserving.
Also some years ago there was a documentary of the North Shore Animal League (and probably others) taking animals and making up a history on them - several dogs have attacked and bitten new owners. I know one who's mom was bitten by a young dog gotten from NS...also in this documentary it offered information that they actually go to puppy mills in KY and elsewhere and BUY puppies because they sell better....I mean adopt out faster. Of course they also campaign against puppy mills but ultimately support them to keep up the demand for puppies.
Here in AL there's always free ones needing homes. Yes you'll need to spay/neuter and get shots. But there's plenty of animals at both places to give a puppy a home. From today's paper in a small town:
free boxer & Lab puppies to a good home.Call xxx-xxxx
free cute puppies to give to a good home.6 weeks old.Part Jack Russell and Golden Retriever.

Ya, you can get from the SPCA, provided they do have a puppies at their kennel. The SPCA will teaches you how to look after the pup & the character f it. And you also can check up for adopt your pet in The Straits Times paper, The Sunday Times, there a adoption post in page 2.

The SPCA - private owners you have to be careful with. I've seen too many puppy mills, besides the SPCA carries the unwanted, and will spay them for you at not additional cost.

There are none or limited regulations when it comes to private breeders. Check around and research the breeder and their facilities. You'll also pay a lot of money.

There are a lot of great mixed breed dogs out there who need homes. Why spend all that money at a breeder? SPCAs are good, but often don't have puppies. Consider also rescue groups. A great resource is www.petfinder.com

You may have trouble finding a puppy at the SPCA, however they usually make sure the animal has all their shots, and that you are capable of taking care of them.

If you buy private, you will may have to pay for shots. Just make sure to check out the puppy and their living conditions before you buy. You don't want to support a puppy mill.

I would recommend he SPCA also. The animal will have been well cared for with shots and needed medical care.

My town only has the city animal shelter and the animals are usually sick when adopted. The only shots they give are to put them to sleep.

Most people that adopt spend a few hundred dollars getting the animal healthy. Then if you don't go back to he shelter with proof of shots, within 24 hrs, they issue 3 seperate $125 tickets. Then they don't understand why people don't want to adopt pet from them. Typical government employee mentality, bite the hand that feeds you.

A private breeder would probably be more preferable, but more expensive. SPCA would probably be cheap or even free. A private breeder is more preferable because you are more likely to know what type of dog it is and it is usually in much better condition than SPCA dogs.

Dependes on you want.
If you're satisfied w/a mutt,w/NO chance of knowing any background as to eventual size/temperament/health,etc. & being shoved out the door w/no further aid or info.,well....pound pups are for you.
If you want a dog w/KNOWN pedigree,a particular breed w/all it's special qualities,a breeder who stand behind their dogs-to the point of telling you "NO,this isn't the breed/pup for you."... Find a responsible /ethical breeder. Which, btw, means NO crossbred/mix/mutt/mongrels.

Compare to going to a fine Italian restaurant OR getting a can of Chef Boy-r-dee.;edible but NOT the same!!!

Go to the AKC site & read the breed standards. Go to a show & meet the various breeds & talk to breeders who KNOW their breed.
