No, Jim_Darwin, we really cannot do that. It is not "the old testament" that we are no longer under; it is the law covenant that is no longer in force.

Perhaps some confusion lies in the way many people understand 2 Corinthians 3:14: In the King James Version it reads “But their minds were blinded: for until this day remaineth the same veil untaken away in the reading of the old testament; which veil is done away in Christ.” Thus, it is common for many to use the terms “Old Testament” and “New Testament” to describe the Hebrew and Greek language parts of the Bible. Is there a Biblical basis for using these terms?

At 2 Corinthians 3:14, the apostle Paul is not talking about the 39 books that are commonly called the “Old Testament”. The Greek word here translated “testament” is diatheke: it means covenant, not testament. So the old diatheke stands for the Law of Moses - or the law covenant between the nation of Israel and Yahweh - not the Hebrew scriptures in their entirety. Many modern translations therefore correctly read “old covenant” rather than “old testament.”

Moreover, that the entire Bible is one work can be seen by a consideration of such scriptures as Romans 15:4 and 2 Timothy 3:16, 17. The former teaches us that ALL the things that were written before were written for our instruction. The latter teaches that ALL scripture is beneficial for teaching, reproving, setting things straight and disciplining in righteousness. Since the Bible’s message is consistent from the first book in the Hebrew part to the last book in the Greek part, it cannot really be stated that we can sum it up in a few sentences and ignore the rest. The Hebrew Scriptures and the Christian Greek Scriptures are neither old nor new – all 66 books dovetail quite nicely to give us a complete and consistent message.

No. The Bible is supposed to change US. We aren't supposed to change the Bible. The Bible takes a LIFETIME to understand and learn from, otherwise, it wouldn't be worth reading more than a few times, right?

This month, I heard a pastor give a really good sermon on a passage in Exodus I'd read on my own earlier in the year, and would've liked to delete from the Bible. Instead, I prayed that God would send someone, or some written material my way that would give some more insight.

The Bible doesn't promote homophobia, although a few Bible-readers are homophobes (meaning they fear and hate homosexuals.) Homosexual behavior is forbidden by God and even back in the day when the punishment for breaking this rule was death, the people weren't supposed to HATE and FEAR homosexuals. They were just supposed to stone them. Not any more, though. Remember another sexual deviant (the woman who was caught in adultery, another stoning-worthy offense) whom the people brought to Jesus to judge? What did he say? He protected her dignity, and encouraged all the hypocrites to put their stones down. Then Jesus encouraged the woman to stop sinning, and sent her on her way, protected and restored.

The lesson of the Old Testament is the extent to which God is offended by sin, and the specifics of what constitutes sin. (Eating pork is not a sin. Dietary restrictions health ordinances (postchildbirth and menstrual isolation) and animal sacrifices were a way of temporary self-atonement for sin, and a reminder of the difficulty of the way of holiness.) The lesson of the Old Testament still stands: God is a holy God who hates sin. The main lesson of the New Testament is how much God loves sinners, despite hating the sin. God the Father sent his own Son, a third of the Holy Trinity of which he was a part, to atone for sin once and for all, eliminating the Old Testament requirements for animal sacrifices, religious dietary restrictions, and religious stoning.

Good luck on your search, mr. darwin. Go see a chiropractor, man, that back looks painful!

I've never said the rest is okay to forget. However, from the specific teachings of Christ, we learn that some of the Old Testament should no longer apply. That doesn't make it "not true anymore."

F'instance, it used to be that we could buy booze... then prohibition came and we couldn't buy booze anymore... then prohibition was repealed and we could buy booze again... then they created the drinking age and some could buy booze and others could not... then they raised the drinking age.

All that is true, all those facts are history and don't change, but the application of the laws have changed through time.

I believe if you look back upon religion you will find what religion is about. When we speak of what the truth is we should understand ALL religions in order to seek the absolute truth. I think each religion only holds a part of the whole reason for our existence. As for the bible the new testament wasn't written until 425 years after Christ died. The bible is not the word of God as most who read it believe, it is only an interpetation in written word of what some believe is what God wanted. Check also on the history of the Goddess. Continue to seek the truth.

Genesis: God made the earth, the heavens, and everything in them. I don't recall the verse that told how He did it, though. It doesn't say in Genesis that God did not set evolution in motion, as far as I can tell.

Exodus/Leviticus: There are laws that apply to sexual behavior here, true. And there are laws against homosexuality, also true. Also laws against sleeping with your mother-in-law, your sister-in-law, and your dog, among others. Personally, I'm alot more frightened of those people who sleep with their dogs. I surely don't want to see marriage between a man and his dog legalized!!

I think we ought to keep the rest of the OT, myself. Lots of history here, not to mention some beautiful poetry, as in Psalms and The Song of Solomon, and some wisdom to live by, as in Proverbs.

Jesus fulfilled the law of sacrifice. I've checked, and I can't find one single verse where He says "Ignore the rest of My Dad's laws. He was just being irritable in those days."
:)

You know the beauty of it though? The people of Israel were under more of the Laws we talk about on here, and we made a new covenant with God. One the Laws can't save you, only the love of Jesus can. The Laws were there to help us understand how tough sin is (1st and 2nd Thess.)

No the whole Bible is inspired by God and beneficial for teaching for reproving for setting things straight, for disciplining in righteousness, that the man of God may be fully equipped for every good work(2Timothy3:16&17)

I miss the menstrual huts. In the OT, we were always being thrown into the menstrual hut (periods; childbirth), but it sure hasn't happened lately...and the NT didn't specifically repeal it.

Why, you ask...? Because (my theory), what woman *wouldn't* like four to six days off every month?

It seems very possible to me that women made up the menstrual hut thing ("Please don't throw me in the briar patch"), but that by the time the NT was written, guys had wised up ("Back to work!").

Anyway, I miss the menstrual huts.

You can sum it up for you, however you like. Your Bible, Your inner guidance is what? YOURS. Bottom line.

Whatever YOU decide what is right and wrong to glorify God through Jesus Christ, is your opinion and no one else's.

That 's why it is called, a Personal relationship. YOU are going to answer for YOU. I'm not answering for YOU. YOU are not going to answer for ME.
Now. If you choose to preach the babble smoke in your head, you go for it.
YOUR lack of God's Wisdom on Your part, does not constitute ERROR on The Bible's part.
I don't know where you dreamed up this idea, The Old Testament is no longer valid, but, my friend, you didn't read that in The Bible. I believe, you may have read this on a cult site or a cult book.
Jesus Christ did not come to "change" the Law. He came to fulfill it. The fulfillment being what? Your saved by Grace. end of story.
A person is no longer bound by what? The Old Law of Moses. What was The Law of Moses? I doubt you know.
You dream up and justify anything you like. I fail to see where anyone should have a problem with your choice. Lets face it my friend. It's not about Homosexual. Thats not your problem.
You hate God, for whatever reason and if it wasn't Homosexual, it would be something else. You and all like you, want to cause unbeliever's to stumble and fall.
Get off your soapbox. Some of us could care less what you do in life. YOU have zero effect on some of ours faith in God. You and all of your friends, shows the real truth in you.
I and everyone else read the hate and discontent. I read the unhappiness in your life. your unhappiness is in your words. Your unhappiness is in your thoughts, actions, your future goals. You all share ONE common denominator. "Misery". You and your friends only love you have is to make "others", share your misrey. It's not Christians going to a Atheist site. It's not Christians going to a unbelievers site. It's not religious people going to a unreligious site, and raising 7 kinds of hate and discontent, exploiting misery on others. Atheists have got this forum flooded with profanity, talking smack, insulting, degrading comments. they can't type a complete sentence without cussing at something.

I'll tell you something Pal. I have worked around death for 28 years. I have worked directly with death for 12 years. I have been on crime scenes, overdoses, killings, accidental deaths by atheists. A few were fortunate enough not to die instantantly. I have seen atheists much much more devout and smarter than you will ever be, scared so bad, they didn't know what to think. In 28 years of death, I have not came across a Christian, 1 time, that sat there and cried from fear of the unknown. You and your friends sit around and sing a sad song. Who do you think is listening? Just your own kind. Most of you "claim" to have been a Christian. Thats at least laughable. I would believe you may have tried it at 1 time out of desperation, and didn't get instant results, and called it quits. This I would believe.
You talk real big, real tuff, real bad, for a spiritually ignorant fool. You made a 1/2 attempt to find a little about God's Word, and you did not have the Spiritual fortitude to act upon it.
YOUR lack of faith in God, is not God's lack of Truth in The Word. In fact, God's Word is 100% correct. I read all about YOUR, kind all through the scripture.
Am I, trying to convert you? hahahahhaha. I have said before, and I will say it again. I could care less about your feelings about God. You have the same exact "belief", as I do. I chose to believe, you chose otherwise.
Until you have the Scriptural mentality in God's love and knowledge. You my friend don't need to be telling anything about the Word of God or what it means. When I want a losers opinion, I'll ask for it. Athesits are scriptual losers. I am a scriptual winner.
I'm not the one, that posted a question trying to misguide someone about lies or mislead ignorance. If God's Word means nothing to you. How are you trying to pinpoint The Old Testament teachings?
All you or any atheist can do, is post a question, and leave. I see little kids do that everyday. They take spraypaint and write smuck, and run off and hide.
I have not seen any of you post anything of any gravity. I saw yesterday, someone wrote a post about a "look at this", you call this a chirstian. hahaha. Is this all you crybabies have? God has taught you nothing. I can see Jessie Jackson has enlightened several of you, to shoot your mouth off and look for protection. The only hope you have is to play a "discrimination card". Why? Thats all you have.
I wish you luck in your journey. There are some of us, that won't share your misrey.
You take 25 men to bed tonight. You marry as many men as you can. You open a Gay Motel. I could care less, I never did, I don't now, and I don't foresee any thought process coming in the future about it.

Now. You want to see what The Word reads about it. Lets do it.

Good Luck.
