I have had a number of jobs and have worked for many large, mid-sized and small companies. Your question is a very valid one, because most employers have asked this.
What is helpful is when you understand WHY they are asking this. I appreciate this question.
My answer will be 2-fold. The first part will explain WHY they are asking this question, and the second part will include some helpful answers.
To TRULY understand the WHY, it is helpful to try and imagine yourself on the "other side of the table", i.e. imagine that YOU are the one who is trying to hire an employee.
Anyhow, here are reasons WHY they are asking this:
1 - Employers want to hire someone who will bring VALUE to their company.
2 - They want someone who has a good WORK ETHIC.
3 - They want someone who is dependable.
4 - Most want someone who is resourceful.
5 - They like someone who is helpful.
6 - They all want someone who has a proven track record. ((There are ways to overcome this if you have no experience :) ))
Here are some answers I would NOT recommend:
1 - I need a job
2 - I need to pay rent
3 - Just looking around
4 - Because the job looks good and good pay.
((The above answers signal to the employer that you do NOT have THEIR interests in focus.)

OK, now here are some possible answers to your question:
1 - I want this job because I am looking for positive ways I can contribute. I notice that the job calls for ____ skills. Did you know that I did this when I was in high school / my prior job, etc.
2 - It seems like this job calls for "attention to detail" skills, or "people skills", etc. I have often been told that - this is one of my best qualities, so I think I can contribute greatly, especially in this area.
3 - Your job calls for a quick learner, and I am known for learning very quickly.
4 - I want this job because it offers me a way to advance while being able to help your company grow, because I can contribute my talents.
5 - You know,I wanted a job that would enable me to use my ____ skills, and this job would be perfect to enhance my ___ skills and help your company at the same time.

((The bottom line is that you need to determine WHAT they are looking for, AND communicate to them how YOU CAN FILL THAT NEED.) :)

I had that question before. I used something about the company to answer but I forgot exactly what it was. You need to give them an answer that they wanna hear. Like if it is a lumber yard for instance, you answer something like: "I enjoy working with wood and building stuff with my hands" Or say its a computer place: " I really enjoy using and working with my home computer and I am actually good at computer work" Get the drift? You can add stuff like: " this job is close to home so I wont have to travel far" or: " I have heard alot about this company and its all been good". You gotta try to win them over in order to land the job. Be optimistic and you will do just fine.

Some first advice from an HR expert...It is an everyday life at work for your interviewer. The thing that you are passing an interview allows you to get in the spirit of the company for some minutes.Showing the right cognition and understanding in this "hidden" moments will get you the key to answering the crucial question...The only thing you would have to answer to yourself beforehand is "how bad you want the job".

Key word: Cynism

Answer honestly...its the best way. before you go to an interview, ask yourself the questions. If you don't like the answers you get, you won't like the job. Life is about feeling good...find jobs that you think will make you happy then you'll be able to answer honestly and enthusiastically.. This is one of the best ways to make peace on earth and a good contribution

This is what I call the "money" question or "deal maker" question. It can be this answer that gets you the job.

TAKE IT SERIOUSLY.

If you really want the job, tell them "I want to be a part of the best _"fill in the blank"__ in the business. Your company has a reputation above all others and I want to be a part of its success."

You have to convince them that you are a team player and that you want to be on their team.

Simple as that.

Tell them you want the job because of the great experience you will have there. Tell them you with being in the company you will have longevity. Also let them know you like a company that is professional, great employer employee relationship.Things of that nature.

Firstly I think u should not be overconfident
Secondly don't say that "ur company is best co." & all sorts of rubbish
Thirdly just be cool and say whatever advantages u feel u hav from that co.

Tell them that you'd really like the opportunity to improve your grammatical skills, since the time you spend on Yahoo isn't doing it for you.
