In Luke 22:36: Jesus says "But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don't have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one."

Well I suppose selling their cloak to buy a sword wouldn't leave them nude. But On the other hand, It seems you wouldn't need to sell a cloak to buy a spirit. This seems like a real sword to me. Perhaps Jesus felt they might need to defend themselves.

Well if you want to be literal, sure. But I think the verse is more figurative. In verse 35, Jesus asks when they didn't have those things, a traveling bag, money, or extra clothing, that they didn't lack anything. The desciples agree, they didn't lack anything. But now they needed a sword, which I think was more figuative, alluding to the armor of God that Paul talks about in Ephesians chapter 6. He refers to a sword as "the Spirit, which is the word of God" (Ephesians 6: 17). Jesus knows in Luke 22 that he will be crucified soon, so maybe he's preparing the desciples for what they will face after Jesus left them on Earth.

Why are you taking the scripture out of context? The verses that precede Luke 22:36 and procede should give you a clear picture as to what is being taught by Jesus. If your intention is to make fun of or jest then you also need to know the scripture that says.."God is not mocked". It is not a threat of eminent danger, run and hide, but a heed for respect of the things of God.

Luke 22:35 He (Jesus)also said to them: “When I sent YOU forth without purse and food pouch and sandals, YOU did not want for anything, did YOU?” They said: “No!” 36 Then he said to them: “But now let the one that has a purse take it up, likewise also a food pouch; and let the one having no sword sell his outer garment and buy one. 37 For I tell YOU that this which is written must be accomplished in me, namely, ‘And he was reckoned with lawless ones.’ For that which concerns me is having an accomplishment.” 38 Then they said: “Lord, look! here are two swords.” He said to them: “It is enough.”
If you read on, Jesus had a reason for wanting a sword.

47 While he was yet speaking, look! a crowd, and the [man] called Judas, one of the twelve, was going before them; and he approached Jesus to kiss him. 48 But Jesus said to him: “Judas, do you betray the Son of man with a kiss?” 49 When those about him saw what was going to happen, they said: “Lord, shall we strike with the sword?” 50 A certain one of them(Peter) even did strike the slave of the high priest and took off his right ear. 51 But in reply Jesus said: “LET it go as far as this.” And he touched the ear and healed him.
Let's examine more evdence.
The paralell account of John goes furthur to explain.John 18:10 Then Simon Peter, as he had a sword, drew it and struck the slave of the high priest and cut his right ear off. The name of the slave was Malchus. 11 Jesus, however, said to Peter: “Put the sword into [its] sheath. The cup that the Father has given me, should I not by all means drink it?”

Matthew also recorded this event:
Matthew 26:42 Again, for the second time, he went off and prayed, saying: “My Father, if it is not possible for this to pass away except I drink it, let your will take place.” 43 And he came again and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy. 44 So leaving them, he again went off and prayed for the third time, saying once more the same word. 45 Then he came to the disciples and said to them: “At such a time as this YOU are sleeping and taking YOUR rest! Look! The hour has drawn near for the Son of man to be betrayed into the hands of sinners. 46 Get up, let us go. Look! My betrayer has drawn near.” 47 And while he was yet speaking, look! Judas, one of the twelve, came and with him a great crowd with swords and clubs from the chief priests and older men of the people,51 But, look! one of those with Jesus reached out his hand and drew his sword and struck the slave of the high priest and took off his ear. 52 Then Jesus said to him: “Return your sword to its place, for all those who take the sword will perish by the sword. 53 Or do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father to supply me at this moment more than twelve legions of angels? 54 In that case, how would the Scriptures be fulfilled that it must take place this way?”

Remember, when different people witness an event, they see different aspects of it. So, just like in a criminal case, let's put all the evidence together to get the whole picture.

Likes account tells us Jesus wanted to be sure there was a sword with them that night. Why would Jesus, certainly a kind man, want a weapon? We see in Matthew's account that it was to show theat Jesus was willing to die for us. Remember, God could and would have sent angels to protect Jesus upon request. But He did not request this.He also told hid followers not to be warlike( Matt 25:52). Jesus also healed the injured man, so no permanent damage was done.
John identifies the sword user as Peter. Why identify him? Well, remember the situation.Peter pulling a sword on a group of soldiers would be like someone today pulling a gun on policemen. So he was indeed willing to die for Jesus. Yet, later on, he denied even knowing Jesus. So we can see anyone can have a moment of weakness. However, Jesus showed that He forgave Peter's weakness. Remember, Jesus can tell what someone's true nature is.See John 21;15-18.
This is probably a lot more info than you wanted when you asked this question (as a joke, most likely). But I hope you find this answer interesting.
