I remember sitting on the trunk with my legs hanging into the backseat of our convertable 65, my boyfriend driving and my girlfriends beside me, the Beach Boys blaring on the radio, while we cruised up and down The Strand in Hermosa Beach California on Friday and Saturday nights....

My first new car was a 1966 fastback, 289, 4 speed. My girlfriend and I were going home one night, and we were sitting at a stop light. Another Mustang pulled up beside us, and when the light changed it took off like crazy. I stood one it and at the next light I looked over and it was a couple in their late 60's, She looked at me and said"He has his grandson's car, and he has been acting like a jackass all night long". sadly I had to see that Mustang a few years later.

I now have another 66 fastback, Midnight Blue, 5.0 with fuel injection, 5-speed. Reliving my younger years.

I've never had the chance to ride in an early one.I wasn't even born in 65...
My brother had a brand new, cheap, base model '81,so I was about 12 or 13 when he got it.4 cylinder 4 speed,no air, only had a mirror on the driver side!White and red two tone with red vinyl seats. But it was a fun little car.I got to drive it once years later.
Then someone gave another brother a '78 Mustang II,also a cheap 4 cylinder. It was blue and white with blue seats and the engine never did run right lol
I had to break out of the 4 cylinder mold so I own a 91 5.0.
My favorites would be an early 70s Mach 1,A Mustang II Cobra,or an 85/86 GT.Something about how they look, and the airplane instruments in the mid 80s models.
But I still prefer Camaros :)

Ohmigod. Thanks for dredging up the memory! I don't know if you could call the Mustang II an "Early" Mustang, but my first car, when I was 16, was a 1975 Mustang II. It was rusted out and beaten up but it was a 'Stang! My favorite memory, and one that almost embarrasses me even now 20 years later, was that the first day I drove it to school I was so hopped up I got there too early, and since there was nobody in the parking lot yet to SEE ME drive up, I left and came back 10 minutes later. I then pretended to find a parking spot, when really I was just cruising for people I knew. :-)

I had a yellow 65 2+2 271 hp 4 speed.Quite a car so simple to fix when I broke it.I would drive it down a local twisty canyon as fast as I could All my friends just loved doing it.no seat belts were ever used .most of the time there was beer involved.

A white '65 Mustang with red leather seats and interior was my first car. What a car! The combination of independence and trust from my parents helped speed the maturity of this 16 year old kid.

I never owned one but those early hosses were the best. My nephew restored a 65 convertible a few years ago ... it was beautiful. He sold it to a guy who gave it to his daughter for her 16th birthday ... the legend continues.
