or is it thousands more years, like evolution says.

i mean, how do you explain the native indians, who were around for 16,000 years if the biblical earth is 8,000 years old.

More like billions, roughly 14 billion

the sun and earth are near 4 billion

life on earth 2 billion

early man 400,000

homo sapian 50000

here is a scale to get a grasp of these numbers.

say 1000 is equal to 1 inch

then 1 million would be 83 feet

and 1 billion would be 15 miles

the universe would be 200 miles long on this scale

of that man has been around for 4 1/2 feet

and your lifetime at most would be 1/10 of an inch

The bible doesn't tell us it's only 8,000 years old, where does it say that, what scripture. It doesn't mention dinosaurs which is a big deal to many but it doesn't give a timeline. Many take the stories in the bible and make it out to be 8,000 years by the "ancient" things that happened around the time people "believe" they happened. This earth is millions of years old but man wasn't here millions of years ago.

Hahahaha! Wow... it thinks the earth is 8,000 years old. There goes a big chunk of the history we've all been taught. And forget about the ancient ruins of most countries, I mean, those must be earlier than the archaologists figured. The Native Americans, psh, history is totally wrong, they came here 12,000 years later than history tells us. <
Gosh, people can be so naive.

... I have to believe that this is one of the more inane questions about the bible that I have encountered here.

Most specialists have decided that the 8,000 biblical "years" are more like milestones than units of actual time. That means those 8,000 years could be 8 billion or more years in actuality.

Oh bloody...where to start? It depends if you are a Literalist yahoo or a more rational person who should have realized that God's word can and has been misinterpreted by us humans. In short the Universe is NOT 8000yrs old!!! It is far older, billions of years probably, but only God knows its exact age (and incidently God himself never explicitly mentioned it in the Bible.)

Believing in a "Young Earth" means disregarding evidence that is right there in front of us. Personally, I think much of the Bible is hogwash, but even so.... I don't think it was ever intended to be taken as literally as the rabid fundamentalists do. I'm figuring that God gave us brains for a reason.

the universe is billions of years old, bible lie about that part. we have evidence that earth already exist more than 8000 years old. dinosaur where here millions of years ago.

Once I have to argue with my cousin about this as well, only difference is that the bible taught her the earth is about 300 years old.

the bible says lots of whacko things. remember, people thousands of years ago used drugs, too. and then the bible was censored and added to in the middle ages...rememebr the king james VERSION. why so many people put faith in a novel that has had so many different contributors and editors is unthinkable

The bible does not give an age of the universe, a moot question.
