are there places on the web for topography charts and info for what fish are in the lakes

Department of wildlife and fisheries is the way to go, but to really get a fell for the ponds stop the small bait shops in your area, ask the old guy behind the counter he will give you the best info. Seriously I grew up outside Boston and fished the South shore for years but when I moved out to central mass, I had no idea where to begin. I stopped at a little shop out on 122 I believe. And actually talked to the guy who wrote for the Telegram. Some of the best info I have received.

I would start at the Massachusetts Division of Wildlife home page; they will have all lakes listed, fishing reports, and stocking schedules. I'd provide a link but it's a Yahoo Answers violation.
