Because in most countries in the East, there is no separation of religion and state. If the church married you, the church must divorce you (and it won't). In the West, people can be Christian and get, say, a Catholic marriage. They must register it with the state. They can later obtain a divorce from the state. But the church might never recognize it. Still, they can move on, as long as they don't go asking the Catholic church to marry them to someone else a second time. Second time they marry, they can have a civil ceremony.
