As others said, no it doesn't feel great, but the effects are worth it. I wasn't sure if I wanted one, but at my OB's suggestion decided to keep an open mind. I did decide to go with an epidural and do not regret it. However, each person is unique and I greatly respect women who give birth naturally. There are alternatives to epidurals as well and I would suggestion you discuss your choices with your OB. Feel free to ask questions of her and the physician that will perform your epidural. I have never had a physician become upset with me for asking questions.

An epidural is almost instant relief of terrible pain. I am assuming you are talking about child birth.
They numb the skin in your back with some numbing medicine before they put the epidural in.
It is well worth it. DO IT! If your worried about the pain of an epidural, you have never experienced childbirth and you need to do it. I can tell you don't understand how bad the pain is during childbirth. Child birth hurts so much more than that little needle. Trust me you will understand exactly what I am talking about when you go into labor.

I had an epidural for the birth of my two kids, and the doctors both times waited in between contractions while putting the needle in, yes it hurt but the pain subsided after it was finally over.
If you are really nervous about it you should talk to your doctor about other ways of relieving the pain, however remember the closer you get to having the child you lose the window of them being able to give you an epidural. You need to talk to your doctor and then weigh your pros and cons and then make the decision that is best for you.

I've had one with most of my births - only one of my children came very fast. With my last birth, they actually set up the epidural first, so when I needed it, all they had to do was press the button.
I don't think it hurts that bad, just a prick for a few seconds. And with all the back pain and labor pains, I personally felt it was worth it. A few seconds for a few hours?! Oh yes!
Investigate the scheduled anesthetiologist first. If you know a good one, request him/her. I'm waiting on my 6th & 7th children, and am again not only requesting, but demanding the man who stuck the needle in my back to help ease the pain of childbirth.

Ok hun, I have had four epidurals. One with each delivery. The only part that hurts is when they numb the area they are going to inject the epidural. once that is over all you feel is pressure. I could not have made it thruogh my first without it. Just follow what the doctor tells you as he/she is preforming the procedure and you'll be fine. remember the small amount of pain you feel from the epidural is nothing compared to labor pains.

I had an epidural and yes, the needle does hurt...but only for a few seconds. There are so many options now with pain management during labor. Go to http://www.babycenter.com/refcap/164.html
for more info. Good luck and God Bless!

I haven't but my sister did and they stuck the needle into far causing her to having air pockets in her brain. She collasped after getting out of the hospital and then she was rushed to a university hospital were they done something called a blood patch and she got alright.
Just make sure the person that puts it in you knows what they are doing. Ask questions of how long they have been giving epidurals and all of that.
And the one symptom of something going wrong with that is a severe headache.
My sister did say it hurt kind of bad.
Please be careful and congrats

I think it all depends on your level of tolerance for pain. I had one and I freaked just because I couldn't see what they were doing. It didn't really hurt though. They put four big long pieces of clear tape on my back to hold it in place and having them taken off hurt more than the epidural. Its always a chance, but I think it was definitely worth getting all the experience of giving birth, but without the pain. Talk to your doctor and find out about the person who would give it to you. Good Luck!!

Not as bad as hard labor contractions. I have had 3 children and an epidural with all 3 and LOVED it!! They numb the area so all you really feel is the pressure of them putting it in. GO FOR IT!!
